What Dyno Should I Use?

I'm thinking it'd be a good idea to get my car dyno'd before I start upgrading it

It's completely stock at present so I'd like to get a baselne figure before mods are carried out

Should I look for any dyno inparticular?

Or should I just jump on whatever is around?

As a matter of convenience, I would say jump on the closest one with someone you trust and continue to use that dyno for ALL your dyno needs!

Don't know what car you have but if AWD find a Mustang, Dynomite or something that is an AWD dyno with the front and rear drums linked. that means they will not decelerate at different rates and potentially harm your viscous coupling. Otherwise you should disconnect your front drive. If you are willing to go to all that trouble then go to the most convenient place. It is only a baseline and reference point for future modifications. Don't pay a lot of attention to the HP/TQ figures. ttboost is exactly right in recommending using the same dyno for all your needs . That is what gives relevance.

Dyno at the dragstrip, then dyno there again aftermods.

Also, like Al said, something where you dont have to min convert to RWD for convenience, if you do change, just use the same dyno and who cares. The most important thing is the power/torque curve and AF ratios. But for power, take that bad boy to the drag strip.

FWIW, my car with K24's dynoed 434 rwhp on a dyno dynamics (I did the mini convert) and trapped 125 mph at nearly 3700 lbs. Doesnt make sense. But who cares, I was trapping 125 mph with an ECU/Exhaust on factory k24's.

Drag strip is great, but I think too many variables are introduced and conditions can never be replicated. The use of a dyno at least ATTEMPTS to minimize the variables so that you can obtain relative performance data. Also, if you're trying to eek out an additional 10hp by simply adjusting the car's tune in order to maximize your HP/# ratio I don't think the drag strip will do it for you.

So, in answer to the OP's question I think it ultimatley depends on what you want to use the dyno for. If all your looking for is max HP/torque bragging rights then simple searches on this on other forums will let you know which dyno's yield the highest numbers. On the other hand, if you want the ability to dyno tune your car and try to recreate (as close as possible) real world conditions I would look for a load bearing, mechanically linked, AWD dyno used by technicians that know how to use the data to maximize your car's actual performance (not what the dyno says your car is doing).

Whatever you do stay consistent, ie same type of dyno and same shop, that way you can be sure as many factors as possible are constant, only variation to seriously consider is temperature.

As others have stated... Dyno's should only been used as a means of measuring your personal car... not a yardstick against others. Use the same dyno, under the same conditions every time if you want to stay accurate. I recommend a Mustang AWD if you have your choice - it's what the big boys use

I've used a few different dynojets and more recently the dynapack. I prefer the dynapack.
