New single mass flywheel now noise from trans
New single mass flywheel now noise from trans
I just installed a single mass flywheel at my shop on a 996 TT. Now I am getting quite a bit of noise when the clutch is out in neutral. The engine is transferring so much vibration it rattles the gear box. I understand the reason for the dual mass is to prevent this. Has anyone put redline shock proof in the gearbox before? Any positive results? Also did a rwd conversion sick upgrade. easy too, all labor.
Update!!!
After understanding why the trans is making noise I decided to go out on a limb and I have done a trans drain and fill with redline shock proof. The trans noise has gone away about 30%!! Im guesing It will go much more after a while.

Around 525 crank, Its a single mass asaco flywheel and clutch masters stage three clutch kit. The clutch disk is a full disk on one side and has little pucks on gearbox side. What do you think?
All LWFWs will result in more noise from the tranny, mostly noticeable when the clutch is not engaged. People describe it as a coffee can with nuts and bolts rattling around. The only quiet choice is stock. From my research on LWFWs, your choice appears to be the heaviest (by only a couple of lbs), so my thought is that it would be the least noisy. I have read from others that the noise might improve after some miles, or maybe those folks just got used to it.
So how does that clutch/lwfw combo feel? I have the same setup, but it is still boxed up, sitting in my garage.

I have noticed the clutch grabs much higher that stock. I have a IA stage 2 set up. Very streetable but now seems to slip on hard pulls since I had a custom tune With EPL.( much more power now !)
Overall I like it and think is is a pure driving experience upgrade.

I have that flywheel and it is great because it's light but a few lbs heavier than a race fly which helps on a street/track car. Does the disc have a sprung hub? Was it built on the factory assembly?
One trick I learned is to use the factory copper grease on the t.o. bearing (need new) but not too much. Some guys use alot and it melts away.

Josh one of the beauties of this forum is most guys have already "been there done that" before you do it. before people do things to their car that they have done no research on I recommend you search this forum.
alot of us have this LWFW (I have a lighter one) it is a racing upgrade and makes alot of noise, this is well documented. also the acceleration and throttle heel toe response is much improved.
all of which you would have found out if you asked ANYBODY with a LWFW.
I find it surprising that someone would do this big mod without knowing why they are doing it, for what purpose, and what the risks and benefits of it are.
no insults intended.
glad you did it it is a great upgrade, enjoy the "mechanical" sound of your car as we all do.
now go to straight pipes and that flywheel noise will go away!

No Insult taken Tom Kerr, I made the decision on the flywheel based on the providers information, they had left that part out ha. My reason fo the post is to see if anyone had done anything lately to resolve the noise.

I have used the light weight oil, I have talked to a guy from redline directly and he said you could even go with the heavy weight bc its closer to the oem weight and maybe be even more quiet. He assured me that it was not harming the trans. I have done research and found no instances of it harming trans.
