Oil Change

Getting ready to do my first oil change. I ues to do it on my 996. I have all the crush washers and filter. I found the engine drain and the turbo oil tanks. I quickly looked and could not find where the oil tank and filter is. Can somebody tell me where it is on my 2003 turbo. Thanks

Arnie

I have a similar question. A friend of mine has a '02 turbo and I was wondering if we need any tools for his car other than what I use on my '02 c2 coupe. I just use the aluminum Porsche oil filter wrench and an 8mm hex head socket. Is there anything else? Is the oil drain plug on the turbo the same 8mm hex size?

Oil tank drain plug is on passenger side just rearward of the roll bar bushing . Be sure to use a second wrench to hold the nut above the plug to prevent counter torque -breakage of that brazed on drain.
I've seen two TQ specs for the CRANKCASE plug : 52 ft lbs ( Oak ) and 44 ft-lbs ( Loren ) . Anyone know for sure - Stephen ?
Also, are their replacement gaskets for the two turbo drain plugs ?
Compared to my former 996, oil changes look like a breeze on a TT , no jacking up needed.

yes there are crush washers for the turbo tanks, engine plug, oil tank and two for the oil filter. Does anybody know where the oil filter is located?

On top of the engine . Oil filter insert is inside the the plastic cap ( that round thing next to the + battery jump terminal ).

Thanks, That was the last place I would look. I usually end up crawling around under the car

Here's Loren's DIY for TT oil change. Looks like the TQ value for both big drain plugs is 44 ft - lbs . The turbo drainplugs are not referenced on that thread , but Oak says they are 22 ft-lbs. Arnie- what is the part number for the 2 turbo drain plug crush rings ? Like I said earlier , having the oil filter up top means no jacking and the four plugs are very easy to reach with lots of work space. Looks like a piece of cake compared to reg 996.

According to the Porsche service manual: tightening torque for crankcase plug is 70Nm (52 ftlb) and for oil container drain plug 60Nm (48ftlb). Tightening torque for the oil filter cover is 25Nm (19 ftlb). I believe that Stephen put together a post with pictures though I could be mistaken. Additionally, when I ordered the oil filter, it came with 1 large o-ring. There are additional 2 o-rings listed in manual but I can find only 1 other o-ring on oil filter stalk. Do people replace this o-ring on stalk routinely and is there truely a 3rd o-ring? Lastly, when I ordered oil filter, I received crush washers for turbo's and people on other post stated that I could drain turbos for additional 0.5 liter but not absolutely necessary, Posrche service manual does not show draining turbo's. What are most people doing. Rob
ps after I was done typing this reply I see that MKW added reply above.

I dont....it's not necessary. Just inspect the o-rings and as long as they're in good condition, you'll be fine.

You should drain the oil in the turbos...it's very easy and only takes a few minutes at most. It's best to get out as much old oil as possible.

Since 4 qts of oil still remain after draining 8-9 qts from the crankcase and oil tank, does it really make any difference to drain the small amounts surrounding the turbos ? Are those drains mainly for servicing/replacing the turbos ?

The fact that there are roughly 4 quarts of old oil in the engine, etc., should be even more reason to drain the turbos. While it may not be written in the service manuals, it can only help. Plus, it only takes an extra 5 minutes to drain them. On average, I probably get 3/4 of a quart out of both turbos.

If I could get all 12 quarts out, I would. However, that's just not possible on my own.
