N00b seeks knowledge...
Well, obviously, I'm new here. I'm in the market for a 996 911 Turbo and would like to research the cars before I plunk down $40-$50k... I figured this would be a great place to start--any information you guys have on pros/cons, what to watch out for with specific years/models would be great! Also, any sites I can go on to read for myself would also be appreciated.
I'm currently driving a C5 Vette, which I love, but think I'd love a 911 even more
Thanks in advance!

I am also a previous owner of a C5... I'd find one with reasonably low miles, well documented maintenance, and DO NOT be scared off by mods. Some will say "Don't buy it if it's been modified or tracked." Don't buy it if it doesn't pass a thorough PPI.
I can't say this enough... I don't think a "stock" 996TT will WOW you over your C5 in the power department, although it will seem like it is a better built car, and it is. It cost more than twice the sticker on a new c5, so it should be better fit-finish.
Be prepared for a bit of sticker shock on parts. It's easy to make big HP with this platform, but it will not be "cheap" to do it, like it is with the C5.
Good Luck with your search, and welcome aboard!

That's another "part" of it that was also a big deal for me... I know of every Porsche (not just the 996s or the one OTHER 996TT) in my town. I have zero concern about seeing one "just like mine" at an intersection.

Thanks! Good to hear from someone who went through what I'm considering... I know that the C5 offers a lot of bang for the buck and I definitely expect the 996TT to be more expensive to mod, but like you said, the fit and finish of the car is superior. Plus, you see A LOT fewer 911TTs on the road than you do C5s

Get one with 600 hp already.... so that you will not spend anothe 12K doing the upgrade...
