Performance Air Filter

I was wondering if putting in an aftermarket airfilter is worth it. I have heard people say it doesn't make a difference so I want to ask all you.
Anyone done it? what kinda power did it add. what brand you use.
I have seen an aftermarket airbox system as well...

a drop in BMC will do just fine . unless you start going for big power.

How is the BMC different than the K&N? I bought a K&N when I started my mods, but chickened out putting it in with all the MAF issues I read about. So now I have stock airbox and stock filter and a brand new K&N in the box. Any experiences? Should I stick it in and buy a few MAFs to keep in the car for those highway changeouts? Thats what I think will happen.

BMC's are around $140 for the TT. Is this investment considered a definitive HP gain?

Thanks,

J

Hey Jay. An air filter is a good upgrade for any engine. If any engine has to work less to suck in air, it can use that extra power to turn the wheels It most cases it's not tons of power, on the order of 5-15hp is probably a lot. BUT on a forced induction car, like ours, it's probably good for a little more. HOWEVER, too freeflowing wreaks havoc on our MAF sensors on higher horsepower cars. Tons of threads here on that.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for chiming in. Are you running an aftermarket air filter with your 18Gs?
I wasn't sure whether is was 'oiled' filters that were the issue with our MAF's or simply higher flow rates?

BMC REPLACEMENT FILTER - FLAT FILTER

BMC has developed a particular production system based on soft rubber moulding which produces the familiar BMC red filters. They are made in one single piece with no welded joints in the corners, thus avoiding breaking risks.

Nope. I am running a stock airbox and stock filter with my setup, runs perfect, no MAF issues, no CEL's. I think it's both issues, especially the oil. But these oil type filters don't afford the proper protection WITHOUT the oil, so owner beware. There are tuners out there that are working on the MAF issue too.

2 seasons with BMC and no issues. Cleaned and oiled several times with their products.

Don't know if it added any power bc I started out with it after the engine build.

As ttboost has eluded to, I am going back to stock airbox and filter next week and getting rid of my V-flow... just too many damn CELs and MAF issues..... at some point I may get a better MAF, or wait until someone has a better fix for all this....
