what I did weigh myself was the CF roof, it is a thing of beauty!!
From what Tom told me, the hardest part is removing the windsheild and back window. From there it's bolted down, but I think those bolts have to be cut and replaced with new bolts because the others are integral. He said it took all of 20 minutes for the guys at Vortex to do, not very labor intensive.
This could catch on quick. I know I'm interested.

There are still cross beams over the drivers head for some protection. Face it, if you roll a car with no cage, the roof is going to buckle under the pressure. Doesn't matter what car it is. The sunroof doesn't extend to any support beams (I.E. Roof Pillars) so it's not going to save you.
In other words, it's not going to help, but it's not going to make you any more at risk.

I was speaking more about just keeping the roof in good shape (ie: flying debris, hail, etc.). However, I do realize that carbon fiber is extremely strong and stiff...just not sure how to treat it as a non track car part so figured I'd ask. I definitely wasn't implying anything about rollover protection though since, like you said, the roof is going to buckle no matter what you have there. My goal would simply be to ensure it was as "solid as the stock metal roof", that's all.
I have been living through all of this daily. so far what I have learned (this is secret inside info for you guys ears only!) to take the roof panel off you just take out the front and back windows. the top rails pop off revealing where the pretty square roof panel was bolted and welded in. these cut right off and the entire panel lifts out as seen in my pics.
that leaves all the original front back side support the car came with so not really lossing any structural support.
the CF piece (pics on the way) lay in the grooves is bolted and glued down the rails go back over it and the window seals and windows go back like factory.
must admit it is not to labor intensive at all.
calling Vortex for details or help or them to do it please mention me to get them to talk about it and they would be glad to provide a wealth of info or do it for you, they are going to start car three soon.
I will post up more later.

Tom I have to admit your an inspiration to us all... as you know I am doing a very similar project which will be completed within a few weeks... between you and Al you have helped me out greatly... now stop messing about and get the pics up of the carbon roof
Tom... I take it they used a angle grinder to cut out the welds... if you don't mind me asking how many welds were there... just want to know exactly what lies ahead?
