K24 Turbo Question

If i bolt the K24 turbo (X50) straight up to my stock 996 TT, would it just start "Working" or do i need software to make it run?

Thanks

T

Techincally, you will be able to drive the car, but I would not recommend it until you get a K24 flash.

Stock ECU is setup to supply fuel for the amout of air K16 can push. Larger turbo (K24 in this case) moves more air, and unless you flash your ECU, you will be running lean in boost.

+1 -- every turbo needs an ECU program optimized for that particular turbo, for both performance and safety issues.

You need software, upgraded wastegate actuators that allow 1 bar, probably a 5 bar FPR and probably diverter valves. It is NOT plug and play. The ECU flash is the second most expensive part.

Chevy: You raise the issue of possibly needing a 5 bar FPR. This issue has been raised before, and I didn't get an answer. For those of us who are running the X50 and get the flash, upgrade the wastegate kit, DV's, free flowing exhaust with 100-200 cell cats....why do folks recommend a 5 bar FPR? I figure the basic flash and upgrades put you at around 500-525...which doesn't seem like it's really that critical to be pushing more fuel.....now the 7-800 level guys yes, but under 600???

Chuck, are you talking crank or wheel hp? My car makes 523 whp. And most K24's with the mods you listed are around that area. I said 5 bar for safety reasons you are almost 200 hp over stock, getting a little extra fuel is a safety measure. I don't know if it's absolutely a must or not, which is why I said probably.

Wheel HP....so I guess my question is for the guys who tune...at what wheel HP level do you see the actual need for the 5 bar FPR? In reality, it's not that much money (for the REAL one, not the crimped version) but it seems like (at the 500 wheel hp level) they are installed more as a trend than an actual necessity. This is a question, not a statement of fact.

Chuck, I think you will have to post a new thread aiming your question at the tuner gurus to find your answer. I would like to see the answer myself.

It's not so much the "level" of power you're running, rather what the ECU flash that you will choose to run dictates. Some tuners run larger injectors, some run a tighter FPR.
