Here is a U.S. source for Mobil-1 5w-50 oil

"Joe,

Good morning and thank you for your inquiry. It appears that we do
offer the Mobil 1 5w50 however it is currently offered in cases of 6
quarts not in gallons. Please let me know if you have other questions
or need anything else. Have a good day.

The Jiffy Lube in my area has been able to get it for me in cases too. The manager charged me 7/qt in boxes of 6.

I go in and talk with them face to face. Special order....3 cases in one week are in by truck and I am on my way home. I don't have to cover shipping....just an idea for others if your local Jiffy Lube's can do this. I suppose other oil shops could likely do this too.

That was 3 months ago. Prices now seem higher for no good reason....

It's suitable for warmer weather startups (still pretty thin cold) and for hotter,
harder running because it's a little thicker when hot, than the 0w40.

If you are normally starting the car in the garage in over 40* weather, would this still be recommended or to go with the 0w 40? I've heard this will also help slightly with smoke on startup? Any truth to this?

Also, be aware that they changed the formula on 0W40 in 2008. You'd be better moving to the Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40, as the formula of this oil is better suited to the original 0W40 formula...

Ah, would that be when they lost the lawsuit against the guys who were using as dino\synth mix and calling it "synthetic"? I heard they had changed their formula after that mix was declared "okay"

I don't have a clue. All I know is that an engineer posted elsewhere that the 0W40 mixture changed in 2008 and wouldn't be a good choice for turbo cars being tracked or driven hard for extended periods.

That's all I needed to be told to change my oil permanently away from Mobil 0W40. I'll use 5W40 or 5W50 fully synthetic.

hey Mike,

does this apply to supercharged cars too? any danger in running a thicker grade oil than factory recommended?

I think I saw the delvac 5/40 at my local Sam's Club yesterday. I'll run back out there today and let everyone know if it is there.
