Advice on an 01 Turbo

Am in the market to purchase a TT. At first thought about getting a stock X50 or S. Then started reading 6speed and realized there is so much that can be done to these cars to make them blisteringly quick. So I started looking at later year S's I now find myself looking at earlier year cars that have been modded.

I found a car recently an 01 coupe that is in fantastic condition one owner and it would appear that he takes fantastic care of his cars. The car has 17k miles on it and he added a protomotive kit about 3k miles ago. As far as I can tell all he added was the proto 650 kit. No clutch upgrades, no exhaust upgrades, no intake upgrades. Just the 650 kit and the greddy boost controller.

Wanted to ask those that know, what do you think a car like this is worth a. and b. What should I look for? Is it ok to upgrade the turbos, mapping etc but nothing else?

Your help is apprecaited! Really liked the car but feel I need to better educate myself about what I'm getting into.

Do a search on buying a used 996TT, there are many topics discussing what to look for. Off the top of my head:

Ask about/check for 2nd gear pop-out issue
Do a PPI inspection at a Porsche dealer or reputable indy
Look up the history on the car (carfax, call previous owners, get service records)

Not a 100% on the turbos in proto 650 kit, but from what I read, if they are K24/18Gs, you will (shortly) need to upgrade the clutch.

As for the value, there are way to many varaibles that go into determining a fair price, so unless you have a link to the car wiht pics, and detailed description, it's hard to tell.

Good luck, TK

Will do

Am asking for everyone's advice on not only this car, but what would you do if someone gave you 60k to make the best possible TT. Brewster's Millions for a 996TT.

Would you start with a stock car, would you get an X50 etc...

Looking for advice and direction

I recently bought a stock 01 TT and love the fact that I can do my own personal touches and know it wasn't abused by previous owner. Fantastic car and getting EPL tune on Friday!

It's got a Proto 650 kit but no exhaust or any upgrades? what's in a Proto 650 "kit" anyway....usually the first thing you do is open up those exhausts. Maybe he sold off he upgrades and put the stock stuff back on.

You can save a TON of money by getting a previously modded car, I usually try to shy away from extremely modded cars though. If I were looking for one right now and wanted to spend $60K, This is what I would do:

1.start with a really nice low mile 6 speed:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-PORSCHE-TURBO-RED-BLACK-IMMACULATE-7K-MILES-6SPD_W0QQitemZ120417713414QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Ca rs_Trucks?hash=item1c09747d06&_trksid=p4506.c0.m24 5&_trkparms=72%3A317|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

And then after I have driven it and learned its quirks, repaired its little problems:

http://www.titanmotorsports.com/st3k2tuuppa.html
http://www.titanmotorsports.com/catwcacl.html

It would be a little more than $60K when all is installed, however you would know what the car has and you would know who can repair it when it does break.

Good luck,
David

Ikold,
Just curious, what car do you have presently or what cars other cars have you "tinkered" with? Is this TT going to be a DD or weekend szlut?

I too am in the market for a 996TT. I've been learning lots of good info from reading many posts here.

For my price range, I'm torn between a low mile, stock TT or a nicely modded, higher mile TT.

Good luck on your search!

It will be a weekend car. I've already got a daily driver M3 and a Rover. Car will be for going fast on the street, as I live in New Mexico its pretty rural and wide open.

What I'm looking for from the group is an idea of if you had 60k in your pocket and you had to get a Porsche. How would you do it!

Damn a used 01 996TT special enough to be a third car? What is the M3 going to become? GLHF!

Exactly what I did but I sent it straight to Titan, and I can't wait to pick it up next week and enjoy my 8hr drive home.
