996TT - basic upgrade questions

I've spent several months on this forum and am still trying to get my arms around a few things, and after searching am still unclear. the questions I have are:

1) difference between blow off valve and diverter valves? my old turbo (Acura) had blow off valves, and it seems as though on the Porsches you can run 2 diverters or 1 blow off. what are the pros and cons, and do you need new piping to go w/ a blow off valve?

2) headers - for 12hp, why do people do this mod? seems pricey for 12hp and better sound

3) exhaust - i always have preferred my subtle exhausts, deep as opposed to raspy. seems like Fabspeed is the best fit for these requirements?

4) ecu - ive always been a mod *****, so i imagine if i did an Exhaust/Intake/ECU package, i'd eventually go for a turbo upgrade. will the ECU upgrade then be wortheless, or can you remap if upon upgrading turbos inexpensively?

thanks in advance for anyone that can help, this site has a TON of info, which is great but also challening when trying to get specifics sometimes.

The 'intake' mod is worthless. ECU mod is VERY noticeable.

Reduce the backpressure with a new exhaust, get a ECU flash, diverter valves as a preventative measure, that should be good until you get into turbos. Pick a flash where the vendor/tuner will 'work with you' when you upgrade to bigger turbos (so you don't have to buy a complete new flash).

The Blow Off Valve name stems from the rice Rocket Brigate who put them on their Japanese turbos and vent them to atmosphere to hear the Whooshh... not realizing that the spent air would be far better used keeping your turbos spooled.

Yes, Diverter, Blow Off and Turbo Bypas Valve are all the same thing. Some perform better than others. Alloy Piston type are probably the better choice, but are really a preventative measure as mentioned previously, to take the strain off the throttle body and turbines upon an abrupt throttle close. Also keeps the turbines spooled up for longer. some are faster than others but all so the same thing.

Whatever decision you make, make sure to think about future. Mods never stop. First question is a preference...second, third, and fourth Q...I highly recommend

Nope: BOV, Diverter Valves, turbine Bypass Valves are all Identical! Vent them to atmosphere and they all sound the same.

Depending on what class of car U drive determines what U call them. Personally, diverter valve is a misnomer, Maybe invented by Porsche for all I know, technically they are turbo Bypass Valves, designed to protect the hardware when U take your foot off the Accellerator at full boost.

Call them what U like, wind diverters, blow deflectors, or whatever, the best are piston adjustables in aluminum, they go down hill from there. OEMs are plastic, diaphram type, crap! But if they do the job, what the hell.

Once you change out your turbos, you can always remap your ECU to your new setup accordingly.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought by letting it open to the atmosphere (and not recirculate) will cause some faulty signal to the ecu for CEL? i got an hks unit from SP Engineering, but recirculated the setup because of this..

I say get exhaust (shop for used, new prices are ridiculous for these cars), a turbo upgrade (k16/16g, k24/18g, or Garrett/Tial 28rs), and the appropriate ECU flash from the tuner of your choice.

I agree headers are not worth it unless you are approaching mad power levels (like Art! ).

Same thing for intake upgrades. Keep your stock filter to guarantee no MAF-related CELs.

will that be another $1,500 or can they build off the previous ECU upgrade at a cheaper price?

Ask that question, when you shop for a tuner. Make SURE they will credit you towards future upgrades, as that will be inevitable.
