Hi sparks, these type of forums reward those that help themselves first. There is a sticky at the top with rules and suggestions. But the biggest suggestion is that you try the search function first. All of the questions have been answered many times in the past by many different people.
If you have a specific question, such as " I read about the 2nd gear pop out issue and wondered if it applied to a 2004 turbo s" people will be quick to respond.

Here is a good post about stuff to look for on a 996 Turbo:

Understand that the site gets more traffic in the fall-spring, than in the summer.
Also Please understand that there is a TON of useful information here on this site, at rennlist, and especially on renntech (from a DIY/technical standpoint). Using the search function, although painful and requiring more effort, well give you much reward in great info.
Make sure that you check the records for the car. These cars can be potentially expensive, if you get one that's been abused... Also, don't mistake "used" and "driven" for abused. Many of these cars have been driven hard, but maintained very well. If the car has been well maintained, but used as designed, you'll have a car that's probably in better shape than one not maintained properly by someone with a thin budget.
If the motor hasn't been maintained, you could be looking at $25K or more for a replacement. These motors are extremely durable. However, if they've been overboosted, run to lean, or improperly tuned, you could get one that's on the verge of spinning a bearing or breaking a rod bolt.
Transmissions on this car are also expensive to rebuild. 1st gear is machined as part of the mainshaft. If you testdrive a car with a "notchy" first gear, know that you'll be looking at $2000 to "fix" that part alone. Also beware that when they were available, the trans for the 996TT was a $10K tranny. They're no longer available from Porsche, and would require a rebuild, so make sure the case isn't damaged on the trans.
Overall this car is one of the better engineered, better designed, better built and better quality buids you can get your hands on. They're a true "supercar buy" of the decade.

it sounds boring but really wasnt, it was actually a great way to kill some time at night but i glanced at the last 6 months of threads and read anything that was interesting or educational, i learnt a ton and know i passed on at least two bad cars as a direct result
you can get as much or as little info as you want here, theres not much you cant find out by spending a little time clicking through the pages
good luck with you search

Great cars and many to choose from, I wouldnt worry to much about the years, I would take a clean 01 over a questionable 03. If you think you will mod the car, try and look for one that already has the mods you want, it can save you a few bucks. There are some really nice examples in the for sale section. Woodster up in the twin cities has a well maintained example that has many good mods done, there also a few with minor mods or almost stock in the 4 sale section. If you find something you like post a link or tell us what it is and I am sure people will chime in with some helpful advice. Best of Luck in your search.
Thanks for all the help guys. I think the mods I will be lookin for is exhaust and a rear wing. More H.P. isnt worth less reliability to me. 50 hp can be made up by driving skills any day as most of you guys know. Thanks again, my search BEGINS....Also if you come across any send em' my way....Thanks again

I wouldn't shy away from a mildly tuned example... These cars are rock solid reliable to around 500 wheel HP. The only concern you should have is when they inch up towards 600WHP. My car has been modified since new and is an 01, and has been dead nuts reliable, except for the known issues with the hinky clutch hydraulic system. It's in the 500WHP range, which is where I'm very happy!
Also, I'd recommend joining PCA and trying to meet up with some other turbo guys in your area to hear their exhausts... I went from a modified Stock system, which was horrid, to a FABSPEED Gen2, which was slightly less horrid, to a Speedtech, which was much better, but still had drone, to now I'm back to stock... I plan to buy some straight piped to use for track duty, unless I end up with a Europipe2 Quiet. Unfortunately the limited space of the exhaust bay seriously limits the ability to bring out good exhaust sound without drone. Every system I've listened to (and I get a lot of visitors from this site wanting to use my lift, so I get to hear a lot of examples) has some drone to it. To me, using the car for extended highway driving at the 2-3K rpm range just made the car no fun with all the drone. So much so that the wife and I couldn't enjoy the car on any little day trips or weekend getaways!

The mods and the miles would be positives for me, especially with such a "known" car.
imo low miles is highly overrated on these cars. Get one that has been driven and properly sorted by someone else (and their wallet
)

Seriously, you REALLY should consider it. The mods on his car are VERY well done and he knows what he is doing. He doesn't beat the crap out of his cars and takes great care of them. I knew his 993TT as well and it was perfect. And NO he is not paying me $5 to say this
