hey Guys,
I am debating whether or not I should buy my father a short shifter for his '02 996tt for his birthday. I have seen a few that seem to be on the market..is there anyone that is considered the best, ie least notchy, most reasonable throws.
For reference this is a man who is not into modifications, he likes sports cars and has had alot from Lotus, Ferrari, multiple Porsches..but hasnt modified any..unless you count buying the Porsche umbrella that fits into the passenger door.
Back on topic....when he saw a window sticker on an '03 tt when we were picking up our Cayenne, he noticed and seemed to like the idea of the SSK that Porsche provides but I am willing to bet that costs too much and as a college student I am looking for quality on a budget.
If you guys could recommend some shifters that you have tried and liked as well as any to avoid i would appreciate it. Also..if you could mention if it is an in-cabin install or an underneath and the cost associated with installs (I dont want to buy one that he needs to spend $300 getting installed or more).
My m3 short shifter cost $325+$60 for installation....is that what I might expect for the 996?

Is the short shift kit at the shifter...or somewhere else in the linkage (I understand it's under the car install)?
And, more importantly, does it make it notchy? I've noticed on one kit that I can shift a long throw quicker than having to divert my attention to 'forcing' a short shift to the gear. The syncros must have longer to do their job.

There are 2 SSK kis for the 996TT (both made by B&M too)
1) the in-car short shifter that is now offered as a factory option (made by B&M repackaged by Porsche at almost 3 times more $$$)
2) The under car short shifter (made by B&M repackaged by RUF, etc. also for 3 times more $$$)
Th in-car is not reversibale without buying a new shifter tower assembly....Also, if you go the in-car route (what i have had on my last 3 996s) be sure to INDEX the cables before remocing the sock shifter (actually, there is a way of doiing it without disconnecting he cables at all

I have the B&M under car SSK which is great. RUF and TechArt also sell under car kits (which look identical to B&M except different colors) but they're 2X - 3X more expensive.

One guy uninstalled the in car kit because of the notchiness, and installed the under car kit and loved it, so I went that route and am very happy. You can set the throw reduction to 10%, 20% or 30% (mine is 30%). The throws are noticeably shorter and much more precise than stock, with a slight increase in shifting effort due the physics involved (although after a short while it's not noticeable), but not notchy in the least. It also leaves the left/right throw unchanged, so you won't mistakenly downshift from 5th to 2nd when you meant to hit 4th (the in car kit reduces left/right throw).
If for some reason you want to go back to stock, it's much easier with the under car kit.
