Need a new bumper due to some unintended off-roading
Need a new bumper due to some unintended off-roading
With the unusual amount of rain up here plus they're painting the lines on my road and digging the ditches out too the road is just a minefield of low traction spots, especially in corners. Well unfortunately a couple nights ago on the last corner before my house there was a big bunch of gravel and sand in the road and if you know the soil in CO, it's basically like driving on marbles and I just slid straight ahead off the road. Thankfully I still gassed it to kick the back end around and avoid a frontal impact and managed to just barely impact the front passenger corner in some dirt so the damage isn't bad and I just need a new bumper cover, lip, and some plastic bits.
So here's the big question: What do I replace it with? I like the GT2 style better but I'm not sure if that's a direct retrofit, or who makes the best quality one. I'd like to stick with polymer but also limit the cost since I'm paying out of pocket not through insurance. So any suggestions (and pictures please!) of Turbos with other bumpers? Especially black ones?
Thanks in advance

oem gt2 front will need new ducts. cost from the dealer is $5500 just for the plastic. there are fiberglass repros out there from various manufacturers that are alot cheaper...
oem plastic fronts can be had between 250-500 depending on where they are. look in the classifieds and on that popular auction website.
theres also the popular techart bits that can be had from authentic at 2xxx to the knock offs for around 1xxx. just depends on how far you want to go. if you go this route, might i add a great fitting kit from precision porsche. i have their kit and it fits perfectly.
hope this helps! good luck

Scott,
Sorry to hear about your incident. Here are some pics of my black turbo with the TA style front and a few other tidbits.

We carry the GT2 bumper as well. It is direct bolt on but you will need the ducts to make it fit perfect (or just cut your stock ducts now).
Let me know if I can help with anything.
Thanks for the shameless plug Tucker

I'd go with the OEM Turbo or GT2 bumper...
From your description, you're also gonna need the front inner fender liner/brake duct channel/brack scoop.
You can do the GT2 conversion for less if you shop around, but beware that the GT2 functional conversion will disturb the aerodynamic characteristics of the car without the addition of the GT2 rear wing. These pieces were designed to work together and they do, well. You'll pull some grip off the rear of the car by swapping the front and not the rear.

The problem is there's no actual factual data to refer to other than Porsche's recommendation that you don't use only some of the components and for safe handling you should use matching front/rear parts which may really just be sales hoopla. I'd love to see a car equipped with wheel weight sensors at each corner and run it around an identical track with different bumpers/wings and see what a difference it really makes. That's the only way to really know. And of course how the car feels to the driver is the most important criteria of all. I'm leaning towards that GT2 front bumper.....
If I decide to go aftermarket on the GT2 front bumper (sorry I love the photos and that's a beauty Edwin but Techart parts aren't for me), any recommendations on who to go with? Who else makes a urethane one like Porsche? I also want a separate, replaceable front lip.

I've been into Porsches for a while now and they have an excellent rep and their website had the GT2 bumper plus carbon fiber lip (replaceable which is KEY) for $1475 plus shipping. I called them to ask what it came with and they quoted me only $1130 for it plus $150 shipping so that sealed the deal. They're making it this week and it should be at the repair shop next week (fingers crossed). $1280 shipped for that bumper, made in USA and including the lower lip, is really a steal. They quoted me $220 for a new lip which isn't bad either since it's carbon fiber and doesn't need to be painted when you replace it. I'll see how the fit and finish is when it arrives but hopefuly from what I know of Mashaw their parts are great quality and don't require much finish work to paint them.
I decided I really don't care too much about absolutely making sure the car balances perfectly with the front/rear combo but if I drive it and I really do notice a difference, then I'll order a carbon fiber blade from Mashaw to balance it out.
I'll of course post pics when they start to work on it and it's in place.

Thanks, as I've been looking around I'm thinking I'm just going to stick with a stock bumper and lip.
If you drive these cars like they're meant to be driven then an occasional slight off-road incident is to be expected. I never stopped driving the car and managed to kick the rear end out and power forward out of the ditch and only impact the front corner lightly. The tow truck guys that looked at it were pretty impressed. <shameless plug>
I like the GT2 look better and I can get an OEM one shipped to me for a little over a grand but... (continued below)
...but the problem is exactly what Mike says. I don't have money in the budget for a new rear wing too and I kind of like the low-slung look of the stock wing. I appreciate a big nasty wing but they're not for me.

I talked to the place again (LA Porsche Dismantlers) and it turns out it is an aftermarket one, not OEM. They don't know who makes it since they can't find a manufacturer stamp on it. But they're selling it for a little over a grand. Personally not knowing who made it, I went for the Mashaw one instead.
