A promise fullfilled
Last night I drove over to FT Worth to get my car looked at. The knocking that the dealer told me was my catalytic converter was not the catalytic converter after all. It is something deeper in the engine, and the mechanic/s are in the process of figuring out what exactly it is. Two weeks ago the dealer told me thay they were confident that the enigine was solid and it was only a catalytic converter that was knocking like that.
Now the car that helped motivate me to walk again, and give 110% everyday at PT, and would be my dream car, has the potential to turn into a nightmare car for me. My son saw how depressed I was after the mechanic delivered the news to me, and tried to cheer me up by mentioning he could try to get it on "overhaulin" or a similiar program, but then realized that wouldn't work. The thought was there and that is what counts. He knows he sees his dad crushed over the car that gave him a spark back in his step and eyes and now he see how depressed it has made me. Right back almost in square one. I gave him a hug and thanked him, and went off to think, alone.
After realizing how catastrophic this could be and how repairing it could be out of my league, I am almost as low as I was when I woke up from my coma and realized I could barely move at all, and unable to walk. It feels like one step forward and four steps back. I find something to look forward to and then this happens.
I will post how bad or good (everyone cross your fingers or pray if that is your thing) the final verdict on the engine problem is. If I can get it fixed I will definatlely get to the TX mile. I was talking with EVOMS right before the mechanic called, and had visions of my childhood dream 500hp DD dancing in my head, and then the mechanic told me he thought it was either cratered or close to it, and was instantly crushed. I don't know what to say.... Thanks for eveyones help and encouragement. I might take a few days off from posting, I am pretty low. Thanks to all.

Thanks,
I just read your post and my heart nearly hit the floor. I know exactly how you feel. My engine just crapped on me too. I don't know the extent of the damage, but I know it's not good and will require an engine rebuild. I hope you get much better news than mine. I think it's a good idea what Lil Powell said, take some video of the car and post it and maybe some of the engine gurus here could help diagnose it before you are forced to dig into the engine. I really really hope it's nothing major, good luck. Sending some good vibes your way.
I had to leave it
I left it at the DFW dealership, it was getting me pretty down. I will go over the first of next week before they work on it again and get some video and post it, so you guys can help. I live 250 miles away and when I go over there I stay on base and they needed the room and I needed to clear my head and get away from the situation it was really getting me down, so I came home for the weekend. I will get back over there and take videos on Monday like I said though and see what you guys think. They think it is the chain tensioner though, to start.....
The car has already been flashed (supposedly) and is decked out in RUF floor mats. The mechanic told me the computer tells him the car has been over revved 25 times, he says that means it has been flashed, does that make sense? RUF told me now that I have the exhaust off the car I can bring it by and they will look at fixing it (the exhaust), I am hoping they will be more forthcoming with the info about the car this time, last time they were less than helpful though, so we will see. I am hoping they will tell me exactly what they have done to this car and that might help the guys working on it diagnose it as well.

You said it is not RPM related but does in knock faster when revved? Does it go away when the clutch is engaged? Light Weight flywheel has those exact characteristics. First started, no rattle, warmed up, rattle. Turn on a/c gets quieter (smoother and slightly higher idle).
Any tech with a stethascope should be able to get pretty close to the sound.

The latest update
The car is now at RUF. RUF looked at it and immediately noticed it was one of their cars and that it has either the RTURBO 520 or 550 conversion, the only way to tell is to contact RUF in Germany and ask them. This conversion was done before RUF had a shop in the US. So now they have it and are going to trouble shoot the noise and figure out what it is. The dealership has isolated it to the right cam bank, but they will have to remove the engine and crack it open to know for sure.
The bottom line is that the people at the bank who sold it to me knew (or should have known) it had MAJOR problems and passed it of to me and had a mechanic who really knew nothing about PORSCHE and RUF, tell me the noise was something small and nothing to worry about, and also realizing I am recovering from a Traumatic brain injury and thought I was the perfect sucker to pass it off to and nobody would be the wiser. As far as they are concerned the banner above their doors could say "Recovering GI buys dream car" and we have done our good deed for the day to support the troops.
RUF is going to look at it to get a second opinion and let me know what they think.
After my wife and I have spent the last $10k from our savings to get the car, and start making the small repairs to the car. The bank had a mechanic in their pocket that told me "these repairs would be small and easy to take care of", now are actually major repairs that will require removing the engine and fixing what it really wrong and costing another $10 grand or more, they will not know until they crack it open. I am still trying to contact akrom@mwhouston.com for a third opinion just to be sure.
At any rate I am already in love with the car and have put so much of our money into it to stop now, so I have to fix it and just suck it up and drive on,
I am going to sleep I appologize if this makes no sense, I just pulled a 24 hour day driving to get it, then take it to RUF then driving home I put in a good 800 miles with stop and go traffic and dealing with people. I will keep you in the loop. Thanks for all who have helped. I took some video with sound and will try to post it in the morning, after church for those who were asking to hear it so they could help. I appreciate it a great deal, you guys are a real help and show true class. Thanks.

Hope it turns out to be a minor thing... Just thinking of the cost of repairs on these cars can frustrate you... Have you talked to the bank about this yet, or are you holding off until you get it fully diagnosed? They should step up if their inspection was wrong, IMO.
