Tranny Rebuild...

My car's going in for an overhaul of the tranny on August 17th. At that time we're going to look at a number of areas to improve upon for durability. I'm also going to have the case tapped for fittings for a cooler. I think I'll be going the route Tom Kerr did, but use a heat exchanger in the setup, instead of an oil cooler. We'll be using a thermostatic switch so it only flows when the oil reaches the correct temp.

More to follow, but I'm also doing the GT2 Conversion from Evoms at that time! No more Pentosin nonsense.

Sounds like a nice upgrade. Please be sure to share your thoughts after it is complete.

Hope all goes as planned!

Mike, Keep us posted on this. The thermo switch sounds interesting and would like to know more about it. I dream all the time of of doing the EVOMS GT2 clutch conversion. I've tried to ignore the inconsistancies of the OEM setup, but it's really getting on my nerves.

I'm also interested in the thermo switch, would like to learn more about it. Sounds like a good upgrade.

Sounds like a great project and I've heard good things on the Pentosin deletion. GL

congrats mike and good stuff. I just had to replace my third gear and third and forth syncros so remember even the best trannies are still going to need some loven every year or so of track use! I did the GT2 conversion as well and was very pleased. mine also has the thermo switch. are you going to run a temp gauge?

Not a clue at this point. Al (From Atlanta area) has done the Tstat switch and heat exchanger/pump, and when I priced those parts out, along with the lines, it wasn't more than $800 worth of hardware.

The problem I have is I am for sure going to need a main shaft. I am also pretty sure I'm going to need to replace some shift forks, and I'm sure the syncros are pretty worn. Not including the damaged gears, if there are any. We'll see.

I'm expecting $3000-5000 just for the rebuild.

Tom, I'll be running a gauge.

Just pulled the numbers for the parts for the heat exchanger/thermostat/lines/pump and the prices are below:

MOCAL Laminar exchanger - $291.50
MOCAL Cooler Pump - $179
Tstat Switch 200 Degrees - $131.99
Lines and Fittings will be another $100.

The supplier isn't a vendor here, so send me a PM if you're interested in their catalog/online store.

Mike,

I have been going through this the last few months, a few things I have learned; The turbo tranny spray bar only covers 1,2 and 3 gear, The GT2/3 spray bar covers all gears and cones, this is only part of the problem.

The other problem is cooling the fluid, not sure how old my fluid was, but it was completely broken down from heat. The GT2 coolers (heat exchangers) (air to liquid) or GT3RSR (liquid to liquid) cooler are essential on all mod'd turbos.

I went all in and built a custom cup car tranny with the RSR cooling, steel synchros and LSD, but the options are limitless pending time and wallet. Speaking of time, do yourself a HUGE favor and source your parts now, it's been several months for me and we will finally have it all together this week (fingers crossed). With the Porsche race season going on, getting allot of GT2/3 parts is very very difficult.

Give me a shout and I'll give you more details.

Did you utilize the wider 28 mm gears?

I swapped out the main shaft and most of the gears using the wider 28mm gears on 3rd and I think 4th as well.
