Opinions on slantnose turbo cabs
Anyone had one? Heard anything about the reliability of them? Any particular issues of which to be aware? Strengths? Weaknesses?
Thinking of getting one.
Thanks in advance

By a "real" turbo S...you mean a factory slantnose versus an aftermarket/conversion setup? Or is there an 'S' version of the slantnose turbo?
Sorry for the beginner/silly question.

Like any old 911, make sure to get a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Other than that, it seems like you've got a good idea of what you want, don't be afraid to travel for the right car. The driving dynamics are very different from a modern turbo, very hard to control at the limit, these cars are pure snap oversteer. If you can find one, try to get the '89 that comes with a 5-speed G50 transmission as opposed to the tall-geared 4-speeds. Some of these cars have really wild options and whacky paint-to-sample colors, some people shudder, I think if you find something really out there it adds a lot of character and is a sign of the times (sometimes good, unfortunately most of the times bad......there are pink 930s out there with white leather and wood all over the place). These cars are great street cruisers though and are pretty reliable if you find a good example.
Porsche Tech is talking about the 964s. There were no slantnose 964s built from the factory, the '94 Turbo S that have the pop-up headlights are called flatnose, not slantnose.

Okay, whew. I was confused. I thought the slantnose turbo was a 930.
Thanks for the advice on the 5-spd vs 4-spd. That is the kind of info for which I am looking.

There was a 930 slantnose. It was an option for any turbo. it cost 10,000 for the slant nose option. The "S" only refers to the engine. There was an S option which increased horsepower. The S was available in 89 and in 1994 if I remeber correctly. So the "S" and the slantnose were 2 different options.
In 94 if you ordered an "S" you got the pop up headlights which was different than the 930 slantnose.

I looked for about a year to find a good 88-89 turbo cab to replace my 83SC cab. The turbo cabs are rare and seemed to hold their value well. Pristine examples were very expensive. I think the look is timeless and would be thrilled to own one. Good luck in your search.
I had heard from my mechanic in San Diego that the engines needed rebuilding after 60-100k miles. The rebuilds were expensive.
Most importantly, I think that Imagine Auto in Lenexa KS has a great deal of experience with the 930 engine and a phone call or email to them would answer all your questions.
