Straight pipe 996 turbo? Anybody try?
Straight pipe 996 turbo? Anybody try?
Just wondering if anyone out there has tried running straight pipes on a 996tt? The turbos already muffle the sound, hell corvette twin turbos don't even have mufflers (they remove them to put in the turbos, one manufacturer anyway) and it sounds crazy nice and throaty.
Not sure if not having mufflers would throw lights or not have enough back pressure etc. But with the cost of fancy exhausts these days someone has probably already tried this. Just wondering what you guys think or if someone has to tell their story.

the dodge srt4 has no mufflers and only a resonator i believe. it doesn't seem like it will cause any power loss, even aftermarket remote turbo systems delete the muffler. it will probably just be a bit loud, but you can always stick a resonator on it like the srt4
I have AWE straight pipes on mine.
Ask Tony @ EPL how they sound. Most will say it sounds like a beast of a Mack truck the way you hear the turbos whine down when I'm letting off throttle. I also just got a noise complaint at my apt complex. I've been here a month.
I don't recommend for a car you DD. I'm looking into getting rid of the Ruf exhaust that was on my car for something else.

For the CEL: Not sure if A/F sensor spacers work on the 996T but I seen in other applications and used on my exige 240s. Basically it moves the second sensor farther away from the exhaust flow creating the same effect on the sensor as having a cat.
just a guess with the straight pipe, off the line street driving would be less responsive but displacement is reasonably sized, so might not make a big difference. Not as loud as NA but still reasonably loud, enough for a cop to look twice and render the stock audio useless.

I have been running mine for a month now. I DD drive mine in Traffic, and open road. I dont mind the Mack truck sound LOL. It sounds great coming off ideal! and you and everyone else can really hear the Turbos whine GL with what ever you choose.

1.5 years with my straight pipes, and the TT is my DD. No complains from me. Well actually only one; i currently do not have them on because i just got back my car from warranty work but they will be going on this weekend.
They are pretty loud; especially if you have larger turbos and are pushing more air though the engine. Mine are so loud at WOT that I wear ear plugs at the track. I think the ECU may need modification for the after-cat sensors but not sure.
Be carefull if you track the car as you will blow sound @ tracks like Roebling Road which has a 103 db limit. Beaverun also comes to mind with a sound limit as well as Lime Rock and Laguna Seca.

For anyone interested, we offer a 3" V-flanged cat bypass pipe and a 3" muffler bypass pipe. You can also use our cat bypass pipe with our cross-flow muffler, for a catless muffler system, if you tire of the loud open pipe sound.
