996 turbo wheel bearing noise?? diff??

i have recently bought a 996 turbo with what i believed was a front wheel bearing noise. but i always believed that when u lean on the noisy corner, the noise will get louder if it is wheel bearing, this doesnt happen. neither can i pin point which side the noise is coming from.
the big fear i have is that it could be the front diff bearings and i have been informed by porsche that they dont do a repair kit, just an exchange.
has anyone found a way of repairing this cheaper? i.e, bearings from another supplier?

2nd little problem is a very high pitch whine coming from the front of the car on tick over. almost sounds like power steering, but when i rock the steering wheel etc it makes no difference.
it also makes the noise when i put the ignition on, as if its a sort of pump.

apart from that its a nice car, lol.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

steve.

There is a squeal associated with the power steering pump and reservoir that usually stops when you put the clutch in, but that comes from the rear. Don't know what could be coming from the front.

I don't know what the pump noise is but it's always there just before you start the car.

Front wheel bearings are known to go bad on some 996TT's.

I have the same issue, see my post last week. Booked into Porsche next week will keep u posted on findings. Have changed tyres and rebalanced, sounds like wheel bearing noise, i hope it's not the front diff.

What are the costs involved with bearings or diff?

thanks

Confirmed today at Porsche, passenger wheel bearing failed £375 all in. Could have been worse!

Could putting the GT2 twists on have affected this? They're not hollow spoke so v slightly heavier than the normal hollow stock rims

cheers!

The extra weight could have been a contributing factor. Considering the number of other 996TT 's that have had wheel bearing replacements, it could just be an occasional poorly made bearing.
