what size exhaust for my 996 turbo...?
2.5" diameter exhaust, how many horsepower is it good for?
2.75" diameter exhaust, how many horsepower is it good for?
3.0" diameter exhaust, how many horsepower is it good for?

HP is different between various manufacturers. Is the rest of your motor stock and do you intend to leave it that way? Are you running K16 or K24? 100 cell or 200 cell cats?

Current plans are just Stage 2 upgrade(about 500hp/500tq), any suggestions on the exhaust?
Somewhere down the line, looking to break the 600 mark. Trying to find the right exhaust now so I won't have to change later.

this is not a NA car exhaust should not be considered crucial for power level or motor size. smaller is not better in any way.
less restriction the better the only negative thing u get with bigger is a bit more noise.
get a X design or cross flow for sure unless u want a specific sound or brand.
2.75 no less u would not gain anything by going smaller but less noise in some situations by going smaller and you will spool slower more restriction. bigger is best in this case
going not big enough will slow you down at certain power levels though.

most definately shouldn't hold u back but 3" isn't much more alot depends on what u want sound loud/quiet drone/none or performance?
3" should spool faster but 2.75 is adequate for that power level for sure

any recommendation on brands that are more quiet?
also, what difference between the 100 and 200 cell?

100 cells versus 200cells i believe the 100cell flows best.
an x type design tends be slightly quieter then just straight through.
all the brands have a quiet version for the most part

If you plan to go to 600hp+, go with the 3". Xflows systems are considered better for high HP cars and sound richer. EP and RUF are quite as their designs are based on the stock system. However they are both as heavy as the stock system while most other systems will save you 20-30lbs. 100 cell cats are less restrictive and usually don't throw CELs. However in Cal, you might need 200 cell cats to get by smog. (Technically changing the cats out in Cal is illegal but if you pass the test, most shops will give you a cert.) Prices range from a low of 2k to 8K so keep your overall modification budget in mind. A suggestion is go listen to and if you lucky ride in a few cars with different systems. You're in the Bay Area so you have several good shops to go to including Sharkwerks (a board sponsor). Or take a ride to Santana Row for the weekend car gathering.

Try to get one that ties the two sides together - it will hopefully drone less. You should really be concerned about drone IMO. Nothing is worse than driving along at just the right RPM and feeling like someone is beating on your head like a tom tom! I'd echo what other's have said about trying for a test drive from someone. I have 100cells in my car and the rear O2s are supposedly turned off - no CEL and the plug-in emissions test passes fine...

1) The cross-flow design has a unique, exotic sound that is just fantastic to hear
2) Our 2.5 crossflow system sounds as good as our 3" system (just a little quieter on the outside) and is plenty loud compared to stock.
3) Our 2.5 cross-flow is virtually drone free and maintains cabin comfort vs. a 3", for which the same can not be said.
4) With our 100 cell Hi-flow cats, turbo spool is light years ahead of stock and 200 cell cat designs (even when 200 cell has larger piping).
5) Bypass pipes are easily swapped for performance events/races, which creates a full 3" RACE system when muffler is bypassed.
6) Overall, the best mix of all worlds - from daily driver comfort to full 3" race, all in one system.
