Looking to get my 1st Turbo
Hey everyone, well this is my first time on a porsche forum so i figured id ask around about the 996 TT. The market for them is pretty reasonable right now, so i figured id treat myself. Ive been in a few 700+whp ones, and im no stranger to german performance. But i heard about the 996's having some problem with crank case leak ? or something of that nature.
Pro's & Con's of the car ?
how long will the stock turbo's last along with the trans?
& the longevity if i do simple upgrades such as exhaust, tune...
thanks guys.

if you are planning on buying one then you need to search a lot, you need to read a lot of posts on this forum to get properly educated, i read at least 100 threads before i bought mine and i'm still learning every day
most importantly, get a ppi and dme report from a good/trusted mechanic

I thought you did a search?? You will find out a LOT with a simple search. This information has been covered time and time again. Again SEARCH is your friend
I hate to 'pile on', but I read several hundred posts BEFORE I ASKED MY FIRST QUESTION.
RMS is rear main seal.... the NA 996 had issues, but the case of the 996TT is derived from a different motor and does not have that problem.

these guys are nicer than they are letting on. Generally speaking these cars are bulletproof. The only thing to look for is possibly a 2nd gear popout issue which IMO has been overblown as a real issue. When driving down a hill, let the car decelerate and see if it pops out of gear.
Are you planning on modding? If so how far are planning on going? That will determine whether you should seek out an X50 or turboS car.
What's your budget?

I see... the rms is what i was originally conserned about, wasnt up with the lingo though
. As for mod's id be content with a tune, exhaust. Ive made big power with my volkswagen... (yeah i know i said vw but it made over 450whp and looked damn good also.) Only problem was it wasnt reliable enough. So i think those little basic upgrades would keep me satisfied for a while. Budget wise id like to stay under 40k. Ive been searching autotrader and dealer auctions and it seems to be alot for mid 30's with under 60k miles. Crappy thing is i really want white but they go for big $$$

The basic upgrade = Flash + Diverters (blow off valve) + Exhaust
Add upgaded Wastegate springs if you have an X50.
And X50 car will make 75 more HP than a K16 car with the above mods.
Get a clean car that has been well maintained. Theyy are old enough that there definitely are some dogs out there. You can find a tastefully modded car and save at least $5,000 -10,000 + in upgrades.
Dan at speedgallery has a very nice 40K mile 03 for the mid 40s. it's seal grey

The Basic 996 Non-Turbo is going to be a cheaper ride to repair if you have catastrophic issues with the drivetrain. But it is also a cheaper ride in general. I seriously considered a 50th anniversary model before buying my 996TT, but looking back on it now, and after properly educating myself on Porsches over the last 3+ years, I can say that there are really on 3 versions of the 911 I'd consider in the 996 era: Twin Turbo, GT2 or GT3.
As Ari said, cheap mods will get you huge gains with this car. No matter what you've previously experienced with your VW, you have a whole other level of sophistication in the Porsche that simply has few rivals in the performance car market.
