What weight oil should I be running??

So I got an oil change on my 2001 996TT with 12,000 miles on it. I live in Phoenix AZ I noticed that the Porsche shop I took it too used Mobil1 10-30W and want to make sure this is OK to run in my 996TT the owner of the shop says he uses all the time around this time of year. The winter or lack of here in Phoenix is 70's during the day and 40's and night.

That weight is not on the approved list. Approved weights are 0W40, 5W40, 5W50. Some will use 15W50 in hot climates, but it is not on the approved list. 30 weight is too light for a turbo.

Climate and driving condition dependent.

That's a fine weight if you have $20,000 for a new engine. The temperature in Phoenix in winter may be mild, but turbo engine temps are not. Which shop is telling you this?

usually use a little thicker oil in the summer but i dont know about that in the winter.

there is alot of oil controversy out there dont get tangled up in it too much some are personal preferences and work jsut fine others will say its the plague.

Thanks for the input everyone just got back from Beck's Porsche and they changed it to Mobil1 0-40W and didn't charge me they took care of it right away, now I have peace of mind that it's done right now!

I stick to the approved list (as above). Join renntech.org (free) and the list is there someplace.

My basic plan:

cold: M1 turbo diesel truck 5w-40
hot (which is my current location 12m of the year): M1 5w-50.

Just my plan and I'm sticking to it. The 5w-50 bottle says it is good for racing..that makes me feel better inside. It must be better.

Jeff
