Oh no, another <expletive> short shifter thread!
I am considering the 997 shifter and would like clarification on the shifter options.
The way I read this is that the factory 996SSK and 997SSK are the short notchy shifter, which is a replica of the B&M and made for Porsche by B&M (I think). I have the B&M version now.
Then the other option is the standard 997 shifter console, which you install in a 996 for a slightly shorter throw vs. OEM. This can be had in either plastic or metal, depending on the version you choose.
Is this correct?

997 shifter is also good with longer throw. I tested drive couple times in 997tt. I like the feeling but prefer shorter throw of 997ssk in my 996tt.
I just wanted to include this feedback from Ric at Suncoast, which I found on another thread (so that people will have that information here if they find this thread instead):
Here is the info I can tell you about the stock ones.
Some of the benefits of the 997 factory kits (over B&M):
Hope this info helps, happy holidays!
- 997 Version - Easy upgrade for 996/986 owners. Smoother shifts, slightly reduced throw compared to the 9X6 versions.
- 997 GT3 Version (2010) - Same as the standard 997 version, but has metal bushings instead of plastic (these bushings are for the left-to-right pivot). This is not a short shift kit, it has identical shift throw as the stock 997 version. The reinforced bushings are probably ideal for racing.
- 997 Short Shifter - Smoother shift and reduced throw. I would consider this kit the best one available on the planet (for reliability, quality, and preformance gains). I don't think this is made by B&M, I'm pretty certain this is 100% Porsche. The guts do not resemble the B&M or the older 996 Short Shifter.
- 996 Short Shifter - This version may have been a repackaged B&M kit. It looks identical to the B&M, but was powder-coated black instead of blue. Unlike the 997 versions, this one would take more time to install, and you have to diassemble the shift console assembly for installation.
Some of the benefits of the 997 factory kits (over B&M):
- Warranty friendly (if applicable)
- Come with gear mechanism and shift console assembly - makes installation simple, a quick bolt-on and clip-on installation.
- Comes with alignment tool, so the shifter will be perfectly aligned.
Hope this info helps, happy holidays!
Ditto. My B&M literally snapped like a pretzel in my MKIV Supra. I was 1 month out of warranty and they wouldnt cover replacement. I'll never go back to B&M. Got my 2nd EVOMS shifter (had one in 02 C4) and couldn't be happier.
I plan to do an instal on my car tomorrow with the 997SSK. I'll do a write up on it when I do, so you guys (and the guys at Suncoast) have a solid DIY on it.
Oh, And there is no way in hell you can convince me that the 996SSK was a "copy" of the B&M. B&M generally copies and "improves" on the OEM shifters being offered. They don't always get it right, and I've been one who hasn't been happy with their performance on at least three different "sports/ muscle" cars... The 996TT, a C5 Vette, and a SN95 Mustang SVO package car. Some like them, but I'm no fan.

Hey Mikelly, I'd still appreciate that write-up as I'm currently fooling with my steering wheel swap and am targeting the 997 SSK install next. Thanks for offering to do that!
I'm going to do the write-up this week... I promised the boys at Suncoast that I'd do it, but have to work the details of where they want it posted... Here, or on their sponsor site.
I'm going to start a different thread with my impressions...
