Oh no, another <expletive> short shifter thread!

OK, now that I got that out of the way, could you guys please help me to evaluate the following options for my 2001 996TT please? I'm determined to stick with an OEM solution rather than go to the B&M, but that is mostly because I like the clean and plug/play nature of the entire assembly (not to mention the fact that it's a factory part...fine by me).

So, I have the stock 996TT shifter and obviously it has fairly long throws. My concern is that if I get something too short that I might start rushing shifts a bit too much and cause some premature wear on the transmission synchros. Obviously, I can control that to some degree...and will. My options are:

1. 997 shifter (seems like the most well rounded bet...good price too)
2. 997 GT3 shifter (aluminum bushings instead of plastic, will I even notice? Considerably higher price)
3. 996 short shifter (unsure about this one, more expensive than the other options, and I believe this is the same as the B&M shifter, correct?)

Please let me know if there are any other factory options I'm overlooking. I'm unclear about the 997.2 GT3 shifter or 997 GT2 shifter...meaning I don't know if those are even different part numbers from others listed above. Since I only want to do this mod one time, the more feedback the better. My car is not a daily driver but is more of a weekend driver. I don't take it to the track either, in case that comes into play. Thanks all.

I found myself more likely to mis-shift with it stock because of the long throw and trying to make the magic happen faster. I have the AP shifter and it's notchy (short throw with just using your wrist not your whole arm and not sloppy) so miss shifts aren't a worry. I've driven a factory short shift and it feels just that (stock, not notchy) but shorter (a little longer throw than the AP). I tracked mine 2 days after install and it was fine and precise. I think the AP is a great deal as well. Oh and also there's a step by step on the install that you can do yourself. That's my 2 cents, good luck.

When my B&M broke in half (literally) and left me stranded we put the EVOMS kit in and it is all good now. But I like it short and notchy.

The 997 stock shifter in the 996 is a great compromise.

Thanks guys.

Paulie, do you know if the 997 SSK is significantly different from the 996 SSK? If you've driven any other shifters, would you say that the 997 SSK might be considered non-OEM like in it's notchiness? I appreciate the feedback.

I had a B&M in my Turbo & it to felt alittle notchy. The 997 SSK is not as notchy as the B&M,not sure about differences between the 996 SSK & 997 SSK.

I went from B&M shortie to 997 regular shifter. Very happy and don't notice a huge difference between the 2 as far as length of throw.

Thanks...more great feedback.

Clarifying question though, isn't the B&M the same as the 996 SSK? I've noticed a few folks over time have moved away from the B&M so I want to make sure that the 996 SSK and 997 SSK are indeed completely different shifters (if possible).

Do a search on this. I think Mikelly did a small study on this? Recent thread?

Yes, diff. part # & shifter betw. 996 SSK vs 997 SSK. i recently swapped out my tequipment 996 SSK to 997 SSK. Finally happy because 997 SSK is now much more precise, not notchy, & smoother shifts. My advice get 997SSK over the regular 997 shiftkit, because you'll always wonder how it feels to get the new smoother shifts while being short at same time.

Thanks patman, great feedback. To everyone else, I will continue to search for more data, but thanks for suffering through another similar thread for my benefit.

I have the OEM short shifter in my 996 Turbo and I think it's pretty good. It's very smooth and the throws are much better than stock. There are definitely shorter throw options, but nothing that's a smooth as the OEM one. It all depends whether you want smooth or are ok with notchy.
