Well, this discussion is very timely as I just took receipt of my new 996tt tonight (I bought it sight unseen and had not previously driven one) and the first thing I noticed was the extremely long throws. I was used to the B&M ssk in my Boxster and just about broke my neck from the whiplash waiting for second gear to finally engage. It reminded me of an old Ford pickup.

The 997 ssk unit sounds like the perfect solution. I assume the install is similar to the Boxster's and that was pretty straightforward. Looks like the 997 unit is actually a little easier because you don't have to destroy the old bushings to fit the shifter into the OEM housing. Just remove the console, mark cable positions, remove old housing, bolt in new housing, reattach cables.

The DIY guide with pictures would be great though to see if anything is different on the console removal.

One other thing, when I did this before the plastic shift linkage was very worn (kind of a ball and joint thing) and I've seen pictures of complete failure of this part. Replaced it with an EVO billet piece. I believe this piece also fits the 996? anyone have any experience with this piece? I assume it is compatible with the 997 ssk??

The Evo part is unnecessary with this upgrade.

There was a 997 C2 at a dealer so I hopped in to see what the shifter was like. I was surprised, it was pretty good. I was relieved that I would only have to spend $180 on the stock 997 shifter. Then I got home and found the car online. It has the factory short shifter. Oh well, add another $250 to the shifter budget.

My buddy Peter has one of these in his 3.8L car. Todd K. at Proto installed it for him and said it was a PITA.

I like it, but it honestly doesn't seem any better than a B&M SSK.
