Turbo reliability

I've been thinking about getting a 2004 turbo cab and then increasing the horsepower. Are these cars more or less reliable than the NA variety? Which power upgrade is ok and won't compromise the cars life? I am guessing Original bhp is around 450 or so, what kind of hp gains can I expect and still have the car useable around town? Not looking for a beast but I'd like to be able to beat a ZR1 now and then if I want to. Is that possible without blowing something?

the 996 Turbo is a very reliable supersportscar. Factory has them at 420 hp and without much expense you can get them to around 490 hp reliably. Enough to beat a ZR1, not sure about that; but you could easily run with the ZO6.

Porsche had the '04 Turbo Cab rated at 415 bhp. Ones with the X-50 power kit option were rated at 444 bhp.

Popular power adders seem to be having your ECU flashed and swapping out the restrictive factory exhaust with a less restrictive aftermarket unit. These two mods should net you at least 70 additional horses. Enough to hang with a ZR-1, but probably not fast enough to beat one outright (they run 11.7@127 mph, according to a C&D review I read). To pull away from one, you would probably want to look into K24/18G turbo upgrade + supporting mods or one of the high hp packages offered by one of the tuners.

You can beat a ZR-1 and still be reliable, going to cost you though.

The engine is based on the no-cost-spared GT1 platform so you'll have a very hard time finding a more reliable platform in any car.

I have 252,000+ miles original tranny, clutch and engine and turbos. Just drive it everyday and service it - you'll be fine.

485 or 515 bhp is not going to get you to hang with a ZR1! The ZR1 has 640 bhp and weighs less than the TT so do the math. I own a ZR1 and 2002 996TT tuned with exhaust making about 500 bhp and the ZR1 will literally run away and hide from that car, not even a race! My ZR1 bone stock on stock tires ran 10.7 at 133 first day at the track and I was there with 5 other ZR1's that all ran 10's that day also. I also have a 996 GT2 making 500 rwhp which I assume is about 580 to 600 bhp and that car is light, approximately 3200 lbs and with drag radials has run 10.8 at 130mph, but still not enough for the ZR1. I prefer the Porsche over the ZR1 as an all around car, but straight line accelleration you better plan on a lot of mods and a lot of money to run with a stock ZR1 because the car is unreal fast!

my tuner test drives his car (customers cars) at 30 to 140 with markers on the rd. to wharever marker he uses my car is at 140. and in his words the f cars (all of em except the f40) are at about 120 125 at the same marker...the f40 simply has no traction for a fair test.that car is way above us it's a race car thats street legal.

with all my modes have only had 1 prob in 5 years (bad turbo) it was after market. i replaced both turbos and have had no problems in a year or so..

the mods are
1 europipe loud
2 headers lg tube
3 giac flash
4. ev ics
5. evo piping
6 evo air box
7 hybrid turbo k16
8 ssk
9 race gas
10 dvs
11 un stock plugs (forgot brand)
13 lwf and cluth
14 ps99s

as far as dd driving the only thing i notice is the can full of nuts sound of the lwf...
well if i stick my foot in it i do break traction quite ofter..
