Maximum "safe & reliable" turbo upgrade/HP level for tiptronic

Guys, sorry for noobish question.

I'm wondering what will be the safe & reliable turbo upgrade for tiptronic 996TT?
I am still debating which kit to get (K16 billet from AMS or K24/18G or K24/20G).

thanks...

Hi,

Well I am nearly at the end of my build

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ml#post2765246

I presume your question is directly related to tiptronic, which I have.

I am sure there are others more experienced in this area, but what I can tell you is that
1) I took the torque converter to a specialist shop in the UK who produce torque converters for cars (other than just porsche) running 1000 bhp. They cut it in two, and strengtenend the internals and brazened it. It should be good for the power I will have
2) on my research the MB transmission is good for up to 1000 bhp. Whether it is, is another story. I know that some people have had problems with clutch packs. The shop that done the TC also have an upgrade for that, but I didn't do it. I will see from the results in the next couple of weeks.

My is a tiptronic S built in 2001. It has 75000 miles on it. Never had an issue to date, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. But I am glad I done the TC, because I think that would have been an issue, and since I had the engine out, it was easy to get sorted.

As to engine internals, then there will be many responses on that. I am just giving you a view on the tiptronic box side.

Unless you want burned clutch packs, I would stay below ~550 whp. I would do the billet K-16s or the K24/18g. If you do a new torque converter I think you could go higher. VividTX knows alot more about this topic than I do though.

What mods do you have now if any? Got to agree 550 WHP is about as high as the Tip will like.

In my research the key is the torque converter. It basically acts as a clutch to change gear in simple terms. So just like standard clutch won't handle the power ( my mate just had the k24/18g and his clutch was fried after two or three pulls - he changed to sachs 890nm and it is perfect now) you need to upgrade the torque converter.

Whether my research will turn into reality in a few days I will let you know, but I spoke to several tuners etc including EVOMS who do a TC upgrade, and that was their opinion as well.

One of the guys on here has an extremely fast tip - perhaps he can add his opinion.

Quote from EVOMS in answer to my question re transmission and TC

'We have not yet broken one of these transmissions so it is hard to tell where that point is. We have only done the converters so far. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please let me know, thanks. '

They knew what I was planning to run in terms of tq/hp, because I was asking them about the TC upgrade.

You should PM Todd (VividRacingTX) who has a very quick Tiptronic 996TT...

Quarter Mile: 10.70s @ 135.75 mph
60-130 MPH 6.33s

You have to remember that the Tip cars and AWD has almost a 30% drivetrain loss. At even a 28% drivetrain loss your engine would have to produce 704hp to get 550whp!

As for what your car can handle safety, I believe HEAT is the killer. Just like all other oils and lubricants ATF will break down after a certain temp and will not protect your tranny any longer. That is why I have been looking to fab a secondary transcooler to keep the ATF in check. A TC will help too but from what I understand if your going to be launching the car all the time.

Thanks for the input, guys..

I believe torque converter is an interesting upgrade for my tranny. But unfortunately unlike u lucky guys who live in the US, I don't know which shop (in Indonesia) should I trust for TC upgrade.

As far as tranny upgrade, I think I'm just gonna do TCU upgrade to improve shift times, even though it doesn't make tranny stronger to handle more tqs (safer approach for us who doesn't have access to reputable mechanic/shop).

What about turbo upgrade? K16 billet or K24/18G?? vote pls

Based on your location... K16 billet, because you'll do more lower end pullings than high end.

I agree. I have more trouble at 1-2 and 2-3. I have never experienced a problem at 3-4 or 4-5 though.
