how to test for 2nd gear pop out?

I'm on the market for a used 996tt. My budget puts me at an 01 or 02. How can I test the car for a 2nd gear pop out when i do a test drive?

I think you find a steep hill and coast down it. (off the gas pedal) and if there is any issues it might slip out of second gear and go into neutral. But I am not sure if a car with the problem would do it everytime. I might try to "assist" the possible problem by adding some light pressure with your hand. But again, I (thank god) don't have this issue, so do a search there are many posts regarding it. If I am incorrect please someone wiser respond, but I am pretty sure. Hope this helps

Wow, I've always been thinking that this was an "under throttle" issue at higher RPMs where 2nd just pops out.

So this is really an issue that happens when the car is slowing or coasting in 2nd from a higher RPM? I haven't tested this either. Will have to try.

Yes, it will happen when pulling up to a light or stop sign and you are on the gas in second and you let off. It doesn't happen every time but if you try it a few times it should happen if the car has the issue.
good luck.

You can pretty much feel it too in the shifter if you know what you are looking for. On coasting to a slower speed, if you lightly apply forward pressure to the stick and it immediately move out of gear, it needs to be addressed. If it feels pretty firmly engaged then you are probably alright. Remember though this happens at slow RPM speeds, not fast.

Hope that this helps,

Tried a few times last night on the way home from work. It did not pop out under deceleration in 2nd gear down to 1500 rpm. However, I did not assist the shifter forward as it has been suggested. May try this tonight, but it seems that at that low of an RPM, it would slide out pretty easily anyway with someone nudging it very hard..

Well it happened to me in my 03 car and I know of it affecting an 04 car. Don't think it is more or less prevalent in any year. I'm sure the is a poll somewhere on here.
