Steering creak/squeak

Noise sounds like an unoiled door... as opposed to say clunking.

Sound is coming from the front end. Happens at standstill or slow (parking speeds) when turning steering wheel, going over speed bumps, anytime there's load on suspension. No noise at city driving speeds or higher. Car tracks straight. Slight vibration under light braking at high speeds, but on hard braking, no vibration (could be rotors, not sure). Power steering fluid, full. Steering feels normal, fluids new.

KW V3, H&R sway, AP sway links. Installed about 1000kms ago, no noise to begin with.

Have attached audio mp3 file zipped. Idling, turning wheel back and forth.

Posted on this in the past. Suggestion was inner/outter toe rods.
Have read lower arm as a possible cause. Suspension perch also a possiblity.

Would like to have some more input. Thank you.

Hi Magnus,
When I first got the car I had a similar noise . Porsche replaced the Supporting mount pt no 996 343 016 04. I had that squeak but also a loud clunk when going over bumps and turning with full lock.
Cant say that is your problem or not but sounds similar. Would also do it if you pushed down hard on the front wing/arch.

hey frank, no don't get it when pushing on the front wing. suspension's changed, pretty stiff, didn't get much motion. no change from squeek to clunk fully clocked. What ever it is, it's getting worse. Used to hear it only when the car was hot, after a hard run. Now it's all the time. thanks.

Hard to tell by that sound clip but my car is doing something similar or the same thing. The noise appeared two weeks after I had a shop install a set of PSS9.

I think I narrowed it down to the sway bar link and the lower tie rod nut. I tightened the swaybar link on the strut itself and the tie rod nut and the noise went away. But about after 1000 miles of driving, those two nuts seem to work themselves loose.

Maybe I should put some loc-tite on?

OP, any luck on your end?

I did some research and pulled up a few other threads on here an rennlist.

It looks like the noise could be coming from a missing rubber top spring seat (some call it a washer). Another possibility is a missing thrust washer.

Here's a picture of the rubber spring seat:

So I lifted the car today and surely enough, the rubber top spring seat was missing.

I'm not too sure if the thrust washer is in or not, but since I'm taking everything apart, I'm going to go ahead and order new ones along with the rubber top spring seat.

I'll post back after I get these parts in.

Did you ever get the noise resolved? Was it due to the missing rubber top spring seat and or the thrust washer? I've looked at the pictures and I'm not sure the OE parts will fit the coilovers. Wouldn't the OE rubber spring seat be a different diameter (larger) since the OE spring is larger? How would it fit? Same with the thrust washer...Where exactly would it be placed on the PSS9? The reason I ask is that I have an H&R suspension on my 996 turbo and it is making some creaking noises also. It seems to me that these noises that everyone is talking about are due to the fact that there is all this metal to metal contact in the coilovers as the spring comes in contact with the spring perch both on the top and bottom. Why is there not a rubber string seat on the top and bottom of the spring to minimize any metal to metal noise? The regular OE suspension utilizes such rubber spring seats.....

I have a similar issue with the noise but i have 2 issues. one is coming from my AP end links, no matter what i do i still have noise coming from them. everytime i look at the and take things apart and put back together, the squeak goes away for a few days then comes back. the other issue is a clunking noise I think i know why now from looking at the photos on this thread, i think my installer installed the spring pearch in the back coil overs instead of the front. I have no spring pearch in the front but instead the back has them. Can someone tell me if my coils are installed the wrong way?

That doesn't look right.... Does anyone know for certain what parts from the OEM suspension are reused in the reassembly and installation of the coilovers? Thrust washer, rubber spring seat??? It seems to me that a lot of these things are installed with parts missing and thus the noise....

I just did some research and found this link:

http://www.dvsegmbh.info/PDF/einbau/...M4-Y597A00.PDF

Look on page 5 which shows the exploded view of the front coilover including all the OE parts which are to be reinstalled. Page 21 shows the rear.

thing I'm confused with is on the pdf link shows it does have a perch on the front coil over, but I have a manual showing the same coil over but it does not show the perch. is perhaps a difference on C2 and turbo?

Thats correct, the C2 does not have the spring perch that the turbo has.
