Is engine removal absolutely necessary to do the swap?

^ No, you can disconnect the intercooler piping at the y pipe, drop the 2 18mm motor mount bolts and carefully lower the motor ~5" with a jack. However, you may have to hack up the stock piping to get it out (I had to). Once that's done, installation isn't too bad.

Edit: this is for the EVO piping install, not sure if the Speedtech add-on will slip in there.

Earl is correct, many have done it that way. As for the SpeedTech plenum, it can slip in place with the motor lowered. The two piece design allows for easier installation and removal.

It seems a shame to stash all of that beautiful polished pipe behind the engine, doesn't it, John? Do you have pics of the unit fully installed looking at the engine bay? Maybe with Y-Pipe conversion? What typical gains are you seeing with just the Intake Plenum change out over stock? Gains with the Y-Pipe? Did you do them separately or together to note step by step gains? -TIA

Yea, it's too bad you can not see more of it - it's barely visible. We have not dynoed it yet, but will be doing one this spring. The intake tubes, Y-Pipe and plenum have proven to make power on several cars and promote quicker turbo spool. Power increases will vary with turbo size, boost level, etc. Here's a picture with a Y-Pipe, etc. - not much to see once installed, but this mod is about performance, so it really doesn't matter - it's just nice to know it's there! And listen to the rushing air passing through it...

It will be exciting to see (maybe also in video) dyno runs on that.

Now this (996) Y-configuration is different than the 997 Y-Pipe set up, true? Have I seen others swap the 997 set up, including airbox over to the 996 models? Or are we talking two separate things here? Because I see you running a dual inlet airbox. Obviously more draw,, but how does this work with the single inlet on the 996 deck-lid where the inlet is sealed and draws from the right side? Is this by-passing this then going with this dual inlet airbox? I hope that makes sense.

This is a 996TT based intake system - the 997TT system is totally different.

The decklid is modified on the interior and the interior liner is cut open on the left or drivers side, then an inlet is added on the left side below the newly cut opening. This duplicates the OEM intake on the right side, on the left side and allows air to be drawn into the air box, equally on from sides.

I know of people switching to the 997 plenum above the cylinders (a very involved mod and usually done with an engine rebuild), but I have not seen the 997 intake used on a 996TT (it may be in some instances - I have just not seen one done).

The decklid is modified on the interior and the interior liner is cut open on the left or drivers side, then an inlet is added on the left side below the newly cut opening. This duplicates the OEM intake (right side) on the left and allows air to be drawn into the air box equally from both sides.
That does sound extensive. Otherwise, if you did not modify to have that "new" inlet on the drivers side, with a dual inlet airbox like that , the seal would be gone and would defeat the total sealed draw.

Not that I would cross over without a lot of thought, time and money, but I would like to see that modification to the underside of the 996 decklid (TT/or GT2) if you know where there are any pics on that?
