Yes, ditto on the lifter part number... I'm in the middle of my build and am still undecided on the lifters. As far as I know, mine were in good shape. Does it make sense to replace them anyways???

Again, the 'new' part number for both would be great! thanks

i think it all depends on the mileage of your car and if they were making noise or not cause they are not cheap

There arent many that have had moving failures, more like mine that fall apart when doing work, if so, hopefully someone will speak up.

The newest part number for an intake lifter is 996-105-255-25 the exhaust is 996-105-041-72. These newest numbers are also the same as used in the 997 turbo.

About $1350-1500 for a set of 12 valves and $650-700 for 12 guides.

During the tear down to replace the rods, we found a few problems, the lifters literally fell apart when they were pulled out.. we were aware of the issues with the earlier years and had planned to use the new part number (there are a few posts about the early 996tt lifters). Someone also overtorqued the camhousing bolts and pulled some threads... I'll post some pics later but why the hell would someone overtorque the cam housing?

Later on during the teardown the exhaust valves were in bad shape, they were so pitted that they would be unable to be dressed up and would probly overheat with the higher power I am looking for, they and the guides will be replaced.

My oil pump also had some stiffness and the gears looked like something went through it at some time, I'll replace it with a GT3 model, I am told not much difference but an additional pickup.

I also planned on cleaning up the heads a little bit, new Alpha turbos, the infamous protomotive 5" intecoolers, intake and exhaust, the 997tt intake manifold, e85 fuel system and a few other go faster tricks that will get us somewhere between 800-1000hp.

We should be doing the build up in the near future and will be posting more as it happens. Cant wait to drive the Proto-monster when I am back home sometime this summer :-)
I have a brand new set of Pauter rods and GT crankshaft bought from Kevin of UMW. Todd Knighton have pictures and infos about the sets. Let me know if you're interested.

Mine failed in my GT2 at only 8K miles. If you are already in the motor, definitely replace them.

i guess you're right since he's in there already but it's rare to see them fail at such low miles

I've got a motor apart right now with intake followers that have come apart. Getting to be a common theme it seems.

Porsche tax, you know how it is. The car had 10 hard years out of them, hard to ask for more considering at what power levels we're at.

Divexx, yep, I was definitely aware of the issue and was on the replace list, interestingly when Todd was disassembling the heads he made a comment about them "falling apart in his hands", not that Porsche is infallible, but I'm thinking most other makes this would have been a catastrophic moving failure.

Ya, I bet there are a lot of motors out there that have issues and don't even realize it.

I posted this thread a while back: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...r-lifters.html
