X50 Package - Worth Holding Out For ?
X50 Package - Worth Holding Out For ?
Title pretty well says it all.
Searching for 'The Car' now.

Should I keep looking until I find an X50 example that meets all of my criteria?
Thanks............

If you plan to go for big power upgrades down the road (new turbos and what not) X50 isn't worth it. If you are looking to utilize K24s that come with X50 then it might be worth it for the bragging rights. Hope this helps.
IMO no...there's enough mods out there now to have fun with a base turbo car...I would focus on colors, options, interior, etc instead. I sold my GT700 car and if I were to look for another, I'd be looking for a modded one with at least 650+
IMO depends on what you are going to do to the car. If you plan on modding the car it is not as big of a deal. If you dont, the bigger turbos and intercoolers are a bit beefier than standard TT's and will probably get you a little further down the road with the right tune. If you are on the fence, I would say hold out, no need for regrets: ) GL with the search!

I didn't think so, but each man's journey is his own.
Condition and history are paramount and trumps all else.
If you're going to mod the car, starting from the X-50 could be redundant.
As I'm learning, you can flash the car and have more power for less money than the X-50 premium.
Good luck with your search. I'm in Austin too. Let me know if I can help you.

Maybe so, but you'll be stressing your smaller turbos more, with smaller intercoolers. I think this board gets a bit jaded in talking about power. If your target is less than 700hp at the crank, which mine is, I think the X50 is a cheaper and safer way to get there. You can have the stock K24s modded to K24/18Gs, do all of the other bolt-ons (exhaust, FPR, WGs, etc.), and have the added security of bigger intercoolers. Passed that point and you're dumping your stock Turbos anyway, so the X50 option is worthless. It all depends on your end goals.
it's not worth it. the same performance advantage can be had for less money. the intercoolers aren't that different -- most on this board woudn't think exchanging these intercoolers is worth the difference and effort. furthermore because the x50 option is included in the broad price value on kbb from 2002 and on, the best deals on this car are found in 2001. just compare the the two years (2001 and 2002) in kbb and you can see how people have been getting hosed in their 2001 trade-ins.

I say no - in fact, you should come up to Dallas, buy mine, then enjoy a backroad adventure down home to Austin. Mod away later if you think it's necessary - which I don't.

If you are going to stay stock I say the X50 is the bomb... but I have an X50 so maybe I am biased. Then again, the new Switzer Billet K-16 Turbos are so cheap it might have been worth going for a non-X50 and just installing those...
Are you going to keep it stock? Are you going to mod it? Considering an X50 is a little value option in the used market why not? Depends on how far you want to take it really. Stock X50 turbos can go to about an honest 530-540 HP with basic supporting mods (don't forget the wastegates).
X50 gives you the GT2 fuel pump which can help over 600HP. IMO X50 + sport seats are must haves for long term resale value. Porshce turbos in great condition start demanding a premium after about 10 years.

If I could do it all over again I would wait until I found an X50, the brakes and K24s are where you want to be. Your turbo upgrade is going to be 1/2 the price then starting with a K16.... and your going to keep the car very close to stock, can use K24 header and the car will be reliable and make big power.
I think if you run K24 turbos with all supporting mods and a good tune car is still stock and you will be able to run with some quality cars.
Brakes, if you can find a set of big yellow ceramic brakes... hold out for those!!! Very important and expensive upgrade many people look over when adding power.

Depends on your plans. Keep it at or close to stock then yes. Heavy mods then no. Upgrade the turbos of an X50, Flash, exhaust, fuel reg, BMC filter, and DVs and you'll run w/ cars that spent 3,000 to 5,000$ more.
Plus how many people do you think paid the 17,000$ extra to Porsche for about 30 more HP? I'd say most people didn't and so that makes them more rare.
But I got mine from a guy that sold it as a reg 996TT and not an X50 so I didn't pay for the ability to say I own 1. Good luck w/ your search and I hope you get what you want.

Good info in the thread.
if you plan on strickly stock, then the X50 is- obviously- the only option for more power. But in stock for it is still choked and anemic... it just NEEDS a flash and exhaust.
So then the next question is 'what's your appetite for mods?'. I felt that the X50 gave me the platform I wanted for mods that tool me to the edge of 'new clutch territory'. I've got a flash, wastegate mods, a big exhaust. Done.
I'd say the X50 really calcs out to a dollar value, and that's it (if you are not a 'stocker'). It is probably worth ~$4k. Slightly better intercoolers, and a K24 base for mods. If I didn't have them, perhaps a hybrid would be the choice, and maybe find some X50/GT2 intercoolers used.
Given the variables in the used market, I'd buy a non-X50 if all the other points match up- you can add turbos, you cannot change the color of the car, or the leather, or get less miles.....
Enjoy the hunt-

PS The X50 does NOT have ceramic brakes, it has the same exhaust as the regular turbo, and the transmission is the same!
