Question for changing brake pads

996tt. Can you remove pads without removing the caliper?
I posted this in the tech section as well...

Newbie question I know, but I appreciate any advice. In anticipation of a DE the day after tomorrow, I thought I would do a dry run replacing brake pads since the car is new to me.

I found a couple of videos that made it look insanely easy except that they were for the cayman S (oops).

I removed the pin, the spring and the sensors. Spread the pads to push the pistons back and then... I still couldn't get the pads out. Do I need to remove the calipers to get the pads out?

I started following this writeup: http://www.heumann.com/bigred/index.html is it accurate?

Thanks!

You sure that they are not just stuck to the pistions? The pads may be stuck to the dampener which might be stuck to the pistions....

Check it out, you might be able to get some large channel locks at the top of each pad and squeeze....

Did you Separate Anti-Rattle Clips From Pads. If not you're not going to get the pad out. What I do for the first time is take the calipers off, take pads out and then take off the metal shims that are attached to the back of the pads. They have two plugs on them that sit inside the brake pistons. If you don't want to take the caliper off, try and squeeze a metal drywall knife (spatula) between the pad and shim to separate. Then try to pull out the pads.

You do not need to remove caliper. I believe on the GT3 (997) you do for the rear only (at least for the GT3RS you do).

What I do to push the pistons back is to take a large tongue and grove plier and open it so that 1 jaw is on the inner pad and one on the outer. Then pull the plier apart (requires some effory). The pads will push the pistons back all the way and the pads will essentially fall out with no effort.

Here is some more - I think this has the video you are talking about, but also a great DIY.

007 DIY is dead on also.

Thanks Fdorn.

I pretty much followed the same video, pushed the pistons back etc, but the pads still would not come out. Felt like they were being held in place by something else. It looks like Page identified it as the anti-rattle clips. I am going to try and separate them from the pads before I try and remove the caliper. Either way, should not be a problem, I was just a bit misled by the video which showed the pads popping right out. Thanks for the reply.

Use a thin scewdriver or scaper to seperate brake pad from damping plate. Do slowly until cover all surface. You will get pads out though slot. No need to remove calipers.
