Short Shifter for 996 TT
Short Shifter for 996 TT
Although I have researched this topic quite a bit on the threads I have not gotten a clear answer in my head so I wanted to reach out to the experts....
For those who have installed the short shifter what are your thoughts? Any downside or problems result as far as cable clutch or gear changes?
Which model is everyone using and recommending.
Thanks so much for all of the advice.

I am using the 997 shifter (not short) and it is a little shorter, and a lot more precise! Absolutely no problems with gear shifts or cables.
It is one of the best mods out there and very easy to install and cheap to pickup! I got mine from a guy who works at the Porsche dealer. Apparently is it pretty common for 997 guys to upgrade to the 997 short or another shifter. $50 for a used one, but had to wait for one to come up (a few weeks).
Look up at the new section (Knowledgebase) at the top and there is a link from Suncoast all about them.

Good to hear. So the one you have is the stock 997 shifter not the short shifter correct?
I appreciate the input

Yep, just the regular 997 shifter, not short shift.
I have B&M short shifter,it's really short but when you are racing 1/4 mile and going from 2'gear to 3' quickly after few passes it may get hot and you are not able to shift fast must do it slow in order to get the shift complete. The first two passes no problem.

Most install either a stock 997 shifter or the stock 997 short throw shifter. Very inexpensive, and WAY better than the 996 mushy shifter. Can't go wrong with eother one. I took out a B&M to install the 997 shifter, (not the short throw).
HI,This is what I did/tryed on my car.I first put the B+M short shifter in,the Porsche dealer did it.It was shorter throws BUT very hard to get in gear when cold and it did not slide in smoothly even after it was warmed up.So,then I had the 997 short throw installed, dealer again. It was GREAT!!Easy to get in and smooth.Made me feel like I was driving a race car.....lol....Glad I did it.Hope that helped
I would like to move from my current B&M Short shifter to the 997 shifter. Not all that pleased with the notchy feel of B&M.
My question is for anyone who has done this, is it more difficult than going from stock to 997? Will the same guidance tool work on the B&M or the counting the threads method work.
I want to DIY but don't want to get it torn apart and then find it w'ont go in gear properly.
Thanks.
Keith

I bought my car with the B&M short shifter and did not like the way it feels, it's too notchy for me. I just bought a 997ssk off another member on the forum and should be receiving it sometime next week. I'm looking forward to installing after all the reviews I've read about it. I will have the B&M up for sale if anyone is interested in giving it a try.
