Fried my Cool Carbons and rotors

So I made the mistake of going with more agressive brake pads on my old stock rotors. The rotors still had good life in them and no cracking around the holes so we thought we could properly bed the pads in before my next weekend at Laguna. Unfortunately it happened to be a stormy week so the pads only saw very minimal duty. Laguna was cold and damp the first half of the day, but that didn't matter much. The brakes held up fine the first outing, then got worse and worse. Anytime I went into the brakes I got bad feedback in both steering wheel and brake pedal.

So I have ordered new stock rotors and new Cool Carbon pads after learning that turning the stock rotors isn't advisable. I was planning on grinding down the pads but after taking this picture last night I decided to chuck the whole lot.

I also picked up new MPS Cup tires so this new combination should help the cause at my next track day Laguna April 20th. Keep you posted and try to get some after shots of the rotors and pads.

you're hooked on track driving now!

i had an issue when enrique was really going hard on my brakes at laguna and it caused the cool carbons to start smoking.

your pads look like they got scortched. mine had a grey tarnish to them but yours are almost white so they must have got really hot.

be sure to run motul rbf600 to handle the extra heat,

i think the cool carbons are great street pads with the ability to use sensors and they really do bite when warmed up.

they are by no means a race pad, there more of a friendly street pad that can take some moderate abuse.

i do sometimes get brake juddering when i hit the twisties and push them really hard.

im going to continue running the cc pads, i like em! and there cheap!

I've got the large 6 piston brakes with 350mm slotted 1 piece rotors on my RUF. I am currently using the Pagid yellows on the front and hate them because they dust like crazy and squeel like a pig. On top of that they don't have much bite when cold. I am looking to try the Cool Carbons since I've read a lot of good stuff about them. How is the bite on these when cold? Do you get much noise or a lot of dust with these compared to the Pagid yellows? I there any issue with running the Cool Carbons on just the front and not the rear as I have the OEM pads with the stock crossdrilled rotors on the rear and have no issues with that set up. I know the Pelican website says they recommend running them on both front and rear but I figured I'd ask someone with real world experience with these. BTW, my car is a street car but I'd like to do a DE event or possibly take an easy lap or two around the track in the future.

i also have the 6 piston upgrade and respective 350mm rotors. at cold the pads are perfect for street use but once they are warmed up with some heavier driving they come to life. the bite becomes instant and the brake modulation is easily controlled.

i had the cc pads up front with oem in the rear, at high high speeds and then heavy braking the car felt unbalanced the rears just did not bite. it created excessive brake bias. got a set of cc rears installed and the car bites a lot harder in the rear and the balance issue it perfect.

im still running oem brake lines, im thinking about upgrading them for stainless sometime soon.

i also installed the 997 turbo rear brake ducts, there not a perfect fit but they must help with cooling at the track.

currently my front rotors have small hairline cracks but are holding up really well. small cracks to me are no biggie

Thanks Mike,
How is the noise and dust on these? Also, do you think they are much harder on the rotors than OEM?

Noise and dust are still very very low even in cooked mode. I don't hear the brakes at all.

They are much better than stock OEM pads and the performance was fantastic at the track, just didn't have them setup to survive the beating. Hope to report back with much better performance after our 20th run at LS.

i think they produce a fair amount of dust but thats the name of the game unless you go to pccb.

i dont really care about rotor wear.. its gonna happen and new rotors are not expensive.
simply put they are a lot better than oem!

girodisc has some, brembo has some, coleman racing makes a very nice setup for cheap replaceable rotors (two piece only replace the outside keep the aluminum hat).

Have to look at slotted options next time, but maybe moving up to 997 brakes or comparable will be in the cards. But new pads/rotors SHOULD hold me up for some time if I can just get them bed right the first time.
