I think it's downright nuts the risks race drivers went through and the lack of safety in the cars and the equipment

every time I strap into a student's car, someone I don't know or a car that I don't have knowledge with..at the very least there are safety items which lends a bit of relief - in vintage times, not so much!

Looks like the only safety device was the ejection seat. Some of those guys got lucky, some of the others not so much.

There was a video I saw a while ago- a tribute- that had some pretty bad crashes. The most memorable was one in which a track worker ran out to assist a car, and was hit by an open wheel car at very high speed. They were only able to ID the pieces after the race when a roll call revealed the missing man......
