PCM1 Nav in California

I just bought a 2001 996TT with the stock Nav system (PCM1) but no CD, so I can't see how good/bad it is.
I see that lots of people here are upgrading the entire unit for an all-in-one unit (Pionner, Kenwood...) but it's quite expensive (over $1k installed) and I really don't need all this for now (probably later if I drive the car more).

My question is: how outdated in the navigation in California (SoCal / Orange County area)? Anybody can let me know?
Thanks

Went through this. I called Porsche and who made the discs. No more discs available for the yr. They don't support it any more . You will need to find a disc for your location. There are 7 discs . You need disc one.

Porsche split with the Nav company in 2001. Even Porsche can't get the CDs. Your only hope is to get a used CD from someone else and hope that California hasn't changed much in the last 10 years - or pay the 2k and get an aftermarket DD with Nav (like I did). Good luck.

The part number for that disc is s0006-0111-102 . Expect to pay about 80 to 125$ each. I found all mine on bay.

Here is one for sale on eBay. They don't come up every day. Just get it or it could be a while. I still don't have a full set.

Not sure where in SoCal you are, but I find mine to be sufficient being 10+ years old. I've only had issues with new home developments, but everything else has been pretty good (I don't drive my car to strange places much). If the address isn't there, I use my cell phone.

I would not spend $100 on the disc tho. The system is pretty old and obsolete. The maps look horrible. The overall stereo doesn't sound so great. I think you can get a double din Pioneer for about $700 nowadays (at least that's what my bro paid).

Good luck and I am in Walnut if you are nearby.

Also, if you figure out a cheap way to play MP3s, let me know. I know there is a cable for the Becker CDRXXX units, but I have not found any info for the non-Most PCM units.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys.
I actually managed to get my hands on a CD: works! For sure it's not the best, but at least it's not all blank...
I'm still debating installing a 2 DIN device ($700 + $300 for install + $100 for the install kit = $1100). Not sure I want to spend that on this, which will become obsolete too in a few years...
I'll probably stick with the stock device, get a iwirep cable to get my iPhone connected with a nice support and that will be it...
BTW, I'm located in Costa Mesa, close to the Ortega Fwy...
Thanks all again.
Ciao!

Hey Elric_996TT,

I checked out iWireP's website and they only have products for the Becker CR/CDR-220 head units. Did iWireP say their cables work with the PCM head units too? Let me know...cuz for $50, this would be the most cost effective way to get the factory unit to play MP3s.

I wonder why Porsche put a bootleg cd-required navigation system in a $120k+ car in the first place...!
