Is a 996 Turbo S a good DD in winter

I live in MN and want a 996TT daily driver, I really like the idea of getting a Turbo S, will I have any issues with the PCCB in the winter/snow??, more from a durability standpoint?

Thanks

Ross

I don't know about PCCB but AWD is worthless without good snow tires.

No problems...

In Seattle we don't have winter temperatures as low as you have in Minnesota nor do we have snow regularly. Having said that, I haven't had PCCB issues in the winter. I've noticed that in wet conditions the PCCBs sometimes have problems but that's not too often in spite of the fact that it rains a lot in Seattle. Durability is fine, but again this is in a winter quite different than yours.

In general, driving the Turbo S in the Seattle winter is not a problem for me. In November I swap out my summer tires for the winter ones and I'm good to go. We don't see much snow here but when we do I try not to go out too much - not because the car couldn't handle it but because I have no control over other peoples' driving. Some crazy people are on the roads when it snows around here - last winter a clown in a Blazer came up behind me while I was stopped at a light and jerked his wheel left-right twice to (I assume) test his traction. Lucky for him he didn't lose control and hit me or anyone else.

^^^ why risk driving your Porsche in the snow, let alone a turbo or turboS, sure they are AWD but why not get a winter beater instead...low ground clearance is an issue even w the AWD and snow tires, just not worth the risk and if you can afford a TurboS you can afford a winter beater

Wow, sorry, but I am at the COMPLETE other end of the spectrum. I can't comment on the PCCB, as I have an 04 X50. This will fourth year of driving mine EVERY day. As long as the snow is cleared to 3 inches are less AND you have good snow tires, it is UNSTOPPABLE.

HIGHLY recommended. Why drive a piece of crap when you can drive a Porsche?

Driving turbo in the snow with winter wheels/tires is fantastic - get a ski rack and go skiing (too bad there are no hills in MN- JK).

I hear ya and I respect that you drive your X50 everyday, that's awesome unfortunately my GT2 won't move an inch in the snow, no traction with RWD and hw/tq to the wheels ...

I was talking more about larger snow storms like 8" and higher...

I have an 2500 Cummins Turbo Deisel which I use in the winter duty outside of towing my race car thru the year, it's good for both!

Go for it! Just get decent winter tyres. These cars are built to be driven, not as garage queens.

i would assume so, put winter tires and go, maybe with the height of the car may be your only problem, but you do have the awd system which work great in the snow...

I just don't know if I could stand to drive a beater after driving the turbo. Rental cars are bad enough when the Teutonic Beastie is being serviced. I guess I'm spoiled...

I swear, we are the only country that thinks this way. It is a car - drive it like a car. I drive mine year round in the snow with no issues in an area that gets an insane amount of snow. Probably 5X that of MN. Just get snow tires and you will be all set.

you can pick up a B5 S4 for nothing. That would be a nice winter beater

+1. Driving in the snow the slush just pounds your car with junk flying off the road not to mention the lack of winter driving skill exhibited in most of the U.S. Driving in the rain in Calif is just looking to get hit by some non-driver. My M-3 got totaled in the rain (Suburban lost control on the freeway doing 85), and my C55 got totaled out in rear ender at a stop light by someone unable to stop soon enough in the rain. I also had a MBZ loaner totaled out in the rain. I don't take the Turbo or C63 out in the rain, that's what SUV are for. Just not worth the risk.
