Reliability
Reliability
Just sold my 01 M3 and looking for a replacement as my DD. Found a great deal on a 996 TT. My question is, how well has yours treated you? I'm not a drag racer, but I enjoy my drives throughout FL, GA, NC, SC and The Gap. Daily driver, spirited driver. This will be my first Porsche and I am crazy excited. Thanks guys.
God Bless!

Mines not a dd but has been very reliable. Do your due diligence and have the car inspected. Like any make, they have some quirks but that should keep you from miles with smiles! you will not be disappointed. Good luck
YMMV. Its not unheard of for the cars to have problems but the consensus on the board is that it is a pretty reliable car. Search the problem areas on the board you'll get a ton of information as to what might break down. That being said its the law of averages and making sure the car gets a good PPI and has a good maintenance history.
My car has been good with only regular maintenance, an ignition switch, and clutch slave cylinder to be replaced. IMO the 996 turbo is more reliable than most bimmers but definitely not a Lexus/Toyota.

The 1st year I had mine it was a DD. I put a little over 18K on it and near the end of the 1st year I did a 3006 mile road trip on 8 days. This car is sold! It's an awesome road car.

When did you sell your car Craig?
agree with everyone that it is a pretty reliable car particularly considering the power it has. However, it is a Porsche and started its life as a ~$120k car so don't expect repairs to be cheap. I came from an 02 M3 and would say that VERY roughly repair costs are ~2x vs. the BMW on comparable items. Part of it is the labor part of if it is the cost of the parts and part of it is that everything crammed together in a very small space so getting to the part that needs to be changed can take a few hours (has anyone replaced a clutch lately?)
Mine is not a DD (8k miles in 2.5 years) but I've had no shocking surprises either. My rear wing failed, and apparently had failed before and was fixed by previous owner. Other than that, I've had a few CEL's thrown/reset, but none with any real consequence. It's a very solid car.
Did the 996 TT ever have the IMS issue that occurred infrequently on a few 996 and '05 997 non S models? I don't know. If so, consider a $25 oil analysis from Blackstone.
Also make sure they run the DME on the PPI, it will give you an idea on how the car was driven through the overrevs (and possibly a point for negotiation). Either way you want to understand that before you buy. A question for the fortunate TT owners out there on DME's is whether overrevs are more common in TT's because it can be ao much easier to let the tech get away from you when the turbos really kick in down in the lower gears.
I can tell you this though, that will be one fun, badass ride! I wish Porsche made a turbo targa!

Nope, no problems as the engine is completely different
My 04 996TT is much more reliable than my 03 E46 M3 was.
That said, I did have to replace the alternator, the brake switch (easy DIY), the headlight switch (easy DIY) and the harness to the right rear lights (easy DIY). Broke one wheel sensor, but my fault.
But, I've put 25K on in three years and it is about to pass 80K total.
Go for it.
