Got spanked by Carrera GT.
I just sold a murcielago and a 430 and bought a CGT 6 months ago. my CGT will eat either of those cars. I also have a 996TT modded to about 600whp and the CGT is still faster under most conditions but it's getting there. CGT off the line is its weakness. it's notoriously hard to launch with it's funky clutch and loads of wheel spin.
I havent heard of 2 versions of the CGT and the mods I've seen were limited to a flash and exhaust that netted out another 20hp or something pathetic. chances are it was stock.

I am as fast as Murci and 430, I tested this twice all the way to 190mph.
Early gt was a "prototype" with 5.5 engine and 556 bhp. It was also lighter in at 1250kg. Quite few were sold at this stage.
I believe all Carrera GT's sold in the US were of the later specification (over 600 crank horsepower) as I've never heard or read about any of the early versions you speak of. However, I am not the most knowledgeable guy about that car (despite my love of them) and you could certainly be correct about some other versions sold outside of our market.
Spend 10K US in mods and your should beat him. Spend 20K (and a new clutch) and you will put 2 bus lengths on him.
A Markski or Switzer 800 package and tuning from Todd K would do the trick.

Looks like... wierd indeed. Maybe some CGT guys can chime in?
From Wiki - Porsche did keep part of the project alive by using the 5.5 L V10 from the prototype in a concept car shown at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, mainly in an attempt to draw attention to their display.
2004 is the proper date, I think with 5.7 612bhp car. But I am no CGT expert, I just got spanked by one!

Don't forget the advantage of a high revving engine either...
Assuming gearing is the same (I have no idea if it is or not), you will shift at 6,700 RPM and he will shift at 8,400 RPM. You are now in 3rd gear and he's in 2nd...

Yep that was the case.
