New GT2 clutch conversion impressions...

So I just picked up my car after getting a bunch of work done and one of the items performed was a conversion to the GT2 clutch set up. Even though my old power assist system was working perfectly I figured I'd see what all the hoopla was about. After much research and on the advice of numerous people including Kevin at UMW who advised against doing the conversion using the bracket kit, I decided to have the conversion done just as it is on the GT2. I had the gearbox case drilled and tapped in the same location as on the GT2 (all the bosses are there already) and the following GT2 parts installed: master, slave, clutch fork, hose, PS reservoir, and the front reservoir lid. This allowed me to have all the old hydraulic lines removed as opposed to plugging them off. The only thing I did not install is a GT2 power steering pump but instead I had the TT pump disassembled and the drive coupler removed from the pump.

The difference in drivability is night and day. The pedal is not too light, not too stiff and this is with a Sachs stage 2 clutch. The clutch engages in the same spot as the TT clutch did but it is much more linear. The stock GT2 slave rod length was perfect which makes sense since everything is installed as on the factory car. For anyone looking to do this I have to say that it is worth every penny. Since I had the engine out of the car it was a no brainer to have it done this way but even if I had to drop the gearbox to do it this way I would. I always like the idea of doing things the way the factory intended using factory parts.

For those on the fence about doing this, in my opinion, this is one of the best mods for the car.....

To me this is the way the car should have come (if you need the power assist drive a tip). I am also happy with the conversion.

Funny, I never had any issues with the accumulator. The original lasted 30k miles before being replaced right before I bought the car. I just didn't like the feel of the assisted clutch.

Better than I would have guessed. Thanks for the information, and I'm really glad you're enjoying the modification.

funny. i've had nothing BUT issues with them. two cars, and actually don't at all mind the "feel" but i'm used to it. it's the ( my ) failure rate pushing me toward the mod. thanks for the report on it. i'm also sure i'd like the feel of the non assisted clutch more.

$1600 sounds good but this is because you already had your engine/transmission out, yes? You went and did the conversion the thorough way, and I applaud that. Let's be clear here though. If someone were to want to do this mod the right way as you have and drop the engine then the bill for parts and labor would be well above $1600, right?

Yes, my engine was out since I was having the coolant pipes welded and a gearbox cooler and LSD installed. However, you actually don't need to drop the engine but just the transmission so yes the price would be higher if you factor in the labor to drop the gearbox. I also provided my tech with a GT2 power steering reservoir which he swapped in there. I ended up selling the TT reservoir and the TT slave/accumulator recouping $600 so the cost of the conversion was actually less. Hope that helps....

Excelent John. Glad you like. You have brought your car to another level (and it was nice when you started). Enjoy Brother.
