The shift cable end that connects to my ball joint busted today, leaving me stranded in oncoming traffic!!!! It's the piece that connects to the lowest part of my 996 turbo shifter lever. I'm just asking for advice on where to get a better part to replace it. Maybe even go with a short shifter, since I have everything apart, if I can find a good one at a reasonable price. Please give me some advice on a good replacement part and short shifter too. I can't believe it busted with under 40K miles on my 996TT. It's cheapy plastic.

Has anyone tried this brand? At least it is not plastic, and only 44 bucks.

I went with this. Sounds like a good item for a good price. I'll post up how it all goes.

Mine broke trying to race a 10 sec diesel truck...imagine that! I went with the b&m short shifter and evo ms billet linkage.

The 997 short shifter gets by far the best reviews, so that would definitely be my first choice, especially since it's an OEM part too. Have you found anyone that's used the one you ordered? The design of most of them is pretty similar since there's really not a lot of room to do something different.

My car came with the OEM 996 SSK and I've been very happy with it.

The place your shift cable broke is definitely the most common spot and is pretty common, especially now that these cars are getting up in age/mileage. Sorry it happened to you though!

it's amazing how cheap that part looks. i replaced with the 997 ssk. no problems, but it look just as "cheap".

My car already had a 997 SSK installed and it seemed to.be fine..however I noticed..AFTER..I broke it..that the piece that broke could "catch" on (I forget what it was catching on) something under the console. What I did was get a super thin piece of sheel aluminum and ut out a piece to go under the cable...what this did was allow the piece (that breakes) to slide around without catching... Next time I pull the console Ill.take pics...
