Obviously, this has been tried many, many times through the years...and I'm not sure how close anyone ever got to finalizing a real set. Are there any prototypes available in private hands? Do we know how long a vendor would need to produce a new prototype, and then get on a real production schedule? Are there any real projected costs?

Sorry for the basic barrage of questions, but someone is clearly going to have to organize this effort, ask all the hard questions, keep people posted as of progress, and collect money for the vendor. I would assume we need to work with a forum sponsor in order to stay 6SO approved too.

My apologies for missing any of the big details. I'll go back and skim this thread to see what I really did miss.
That's why the original thread was locked... Since all the vendors on 6SO have been keeping their distance on this one even though there have been many threads crying for a product, I had to go outside to, yes, an Asian manufacturer who had already produced what appears to be a reasonable quality product for the 996 and 997.

The projected cost for the mold was $150 K plus. The vendor I talked to was willing to go ahead with a commitment of 250 at $600 per set. He indicated about 2 months development time was required from the go-ahead to production. I'd still be happy to see a vendor from here take this on, but they have been pretty quiet though all of our discussions..

In the other thread I was just asking for a thumbs up on who would be interested at the $600 price. There was no ordering process in place and, after seeing the response, it would have been totally acceptable for a 6SO vendor to take it on, but the Admins shut me down so we have not even determined if we could meet the 250 target.

I don't want to sound like a pessimist and certainly don't want to rain on anyone's parade but getting 250 commitments for a $600 product produced in Asia (I'm guessing not Japan) with questionable quality that provides zero performance enhancement will be mathematically impossible. Let's just say that 50% of the people here would want the LEDs (very optimistic percentage) then you would need a pool of 500 active members between here, Rennlist, Renntrack, and whatever other minor forums there are. How many active members do we have here since most members overlap the other forums? 50-80 tops? Posting a short message saying "count me I" is a little different that putting down an actual deposit. I see about 40 commitments on this as I would personally want to see that bowl of rice first to see the fit and finish before spending $600. I think we have all seen the quality of Chinese made intercoolers touted to be a great product. Just my $0.02....

At least 45 unofficially confirmed here.

There does appear to be interest, 250 will be tough I think, maybe 175 at $850, or 150 at $1k is more doable.

Again, for those prices they would need to be quality pieces, plus it will be tough to get people to put down the cash in advance without seeing a finished product, or at least some samples of LED housings they have produced for other vehicle models ?

pwdrhound all good points but where do you think the aftermarket NB 996 and 997 tails come from now?

Slider. I appreciate your willingness to help. You should ask the vendor to simply start a Kickstarter and on our end we will try to funnel people and commitments by getting the word out.

Okay ... I volunteer my car as the test mule. Just PM me for my address and send the prototype LED taillights. I will install them and post a full report.

I have no idea where the aftermarket NB996 and 997 tails come from as I haven't seen any first hand. I am just speaking from experience having seen other aftermarket products made in the far East where quality was sorely lacking and no way would I ever put anything like that on my German car just to have LEDs. If these lights were made in the US or a reputable European supplier than that would be another story. I still think having 45 + people say on a forum that "they are in" is different that having 45+ people put down a firm $300 or $500 deposit in my opinion. I hope it happens for everyone but I just don't see it as producing a high quality mold is very very expensive and the economies of scale just don't work here.....JMHO

The vendor in question already has 996 NB LEDs and 997 LEDs out in the market. One would expect that the product they produce for the 996 WB at our request should be of equivalent quality. So, it will just be a matter of hunting down someone who has purchased one of the LEDs already in production and have them tell us about fit and finish. We will not be going into this blind.

EBWorks - I'll send you a PM - Thanks!

I wonder how many folks would be ok with using OEM units retro fitted with leds.

We are at 124 - just 1 away from halfway there. Let's not loose steam on this guys.

The retrofit LEDs would probably make some people happy, but I think many are having problems with cracking lenses (me too) and with the mount points getting broken so a totally new enclosure is required.

that's about 1/3 of the reason i seriously hope this happens. i sure don't want oem replacements, and my drivers side mount is barely hanging on

Let me do some digging, I make custom lights and may be able to hash out a few vendors.

I am in, IF they are NOT made in China. I don't buy anything made there if it can be helped. USA or Europe is much preferred. I'd love to have them, but China is a show-stopper for me. I wouldn't have them if you paid me $600 to put them on my car.
