Status - 996 TT Rear LEDs

I had started a thread to get a feel for the number of people willing to commit to buying the LEDs in a effort to get a manufacturer to produce the LEDs. One manufacturer I contacted said he needed 250 orders at $600 each to be interested in fabricating the mold and starting production. That thread was shut down by the moderators/admins because there are vendors on this site that produce LEDs and apparently it would not be fair to them to allow this survey to be conducted on this site (even though they all refuse the produce the LEDs for the 996 TT).

Here is the last response I received for the admins after making it perfectly clear that no vendor on this site offers the LEDs for the 996 TT:

we can't nit pic and become model specific...we have a vendor that offers LED's for some of the cars represented on the forum..that is good enough...sorry, but they pay the bills and deserve some consideration...do your group buy on a board that is not a fully sponsored one like this one...thanks, chuck

Sorry for getting your hopes up - I tried. I will find a way to take this offsite and will post something when I am ready.

Appreciate the effort, very interested .. Please keep us posted. I think this is doable, the key will be making a quality piece, if you build it, they will come If there is only one option, means EVERY shop, EVERY forum will recommend this solution, if the product is quality, there shouldn't be an issue.

What is big draw of LEDs? Is there a durability issue with the regular lights or is is purely a cosmetic thing to make the car look like a 997? I've never had any issues with mine as they have always worked perfectly.

Many people - such as me - have small cracks appearing in the lens. If I have to buy a new set from the dealer at $600+, I would rather buy LEDs because of the more modern look.

Almost all the LED aftermarket options I've seen for NB 996's look cheap to me and a hint of rice... But that's just my $.02.

I do appreciate your efforts at trying to bring a product to market.

Not only would I not mind the tail lights looking more modern but my factory equipped tails just randomly began to crack in the lenses. The stars just got bigger and bigger. Eventually I bought another set of tails which I believe was like $915 a few years ago (with a discount)... but now one of my tails is separating, has a little chip in the corner, the lense has a few little cracks. The other side has a few little cracks. Some of you may not have had the same experience but I am not prepared to spend that much again on crap OEM tails.

I gotta say I think its a little crazy to me that the admins are almost willing to stay in between us and a possible group when I'm sure they are perfectly aware that no vendors on here have been willing to set this up. Those vendors have received consideration... they simply declined and blew off any possibility. And one specific vendor basically left us out to dry without any closure and reasoning. The forum that brings us together is basically getting in the way of potential to get something we want. Somebody should setup a Kickstarter.
