Trying to get into a 996 turbo
Hey guys I'm selling my beloved supercharged M3 and trying to get into the 996 turbo world. I got a great price for mine I'm just debating on getting a porsche due to all the horror stories I hear about the turbos... I'm probably gonna get a low mile one nd I have my eye on one already.. Anything I should really know about and stay away from.... . I really appreciate all the info u guys have !
like any car they have a few issues specific to the turbo.
coolant line failure
slave/accumolator failure
2nd gear popout
hyd spoiler failure
radiator failure
those are the high dollar items. good thing is most of them if repaired with the newer options wont fail again and you can enjoy the car for yrs to come. the engine is a well built beast and will last a very long time

i dont knowif you can get an aftermarket warrenty at all for a 10 yr old car but if you do i suppose its possible they would pay for the rebuild. these cars are far from rare so if yours has any big issues its easier to walk away and keep looking for a better car to buy
if the 2nd gear popout is already present a rebuild is the only fix. approx 3000$ or more depending on what you do while your inside the trans.

no problem. theres a massive amount of info on here about each issue. imo most 2nd gear issues have already been addressed by this time but the coolant line issue is another problem all together. easy to spot and when they fail it requires a lot of work to fix. of course once its done you never have to worry about it. some had it happen quickly and others have huge miles on their cars with no issue. i have 40k on mine and fingers are crossed!

so you think the car your wanting has 2nd gear issues? its easy to check
The gentlemen stated it in the post . Said he had a GBOX detent put in... I've read about it alot but it's not a permanent fix that I know ... He is a very honest seller. We have been going back over the phone and texts and sent me all the pics and videos I asked for ... I was just worried about the resale of the car later with the problem if I don't fix it myself . I heard to get a whole new tranny and everything we r talking big money like 8k or something . That's why I wanted to get a warranty and make them pay for it u know . What do u think

I have not encountered any of the above yet except slave/accumulator with 42,000 hard miles on mine.
Lucky I guess?

Yeah and it got this one that I fell in love with. :/ I can buy a bone stock speed yellow with 30851 miles on it for 44k and the dealer offered me a warranty through preferred warranty company... Said they will cover the 2nd gear problem which is most important to me know . Anyone have or heard of preferred. It's a warranty for 3yrs 2500$ covers all labor cost from dealers and parts.

didnt mean to imply every car would have these issues but its a common search on here which means it does happen. i have a fixed spoiler so ill never have that issue. slave/acc was fixed 2 times on beofre i got it so we know that wont happen for at least another week!
no tranny issues and im hoping the coolant lines stay intact for a good long time, but planning for that in case it does

My car that I commented above on is a 2004.
I believe in extended warranty, saved me more then I ever paid for them on all my previous cars and this one. If the dealer is selling it, I would not worry..
Good Luck.
