are H&R's the best lowering spring?
And in keeping with the Internet policy of having 180 degree opposing views on all subjects:
Two weeks ago I got rid of the H&R Coilovers that came on my car. Had them replaced with new OEM struts and H&R springs. Couldn't be happier. The ride over bad pavement is better, and over decent pavement that just has some undulations rather than actual potholes or cracks, it is MUCH better. I can't get over how much better for street driving I like this setup. The springs are purely for cosmetics (lowering) and I suspect I'd like the stock spring rates even better for daily driving purposes, but I'm vain and like the dropped look.
But any way you slice it, the new setup is far preferable for street driving.
Disclaimer: I also changed wheels from 19 to 18 at the same time, so that obviously has a contributing value. From years of experience I would suggest the strut change has a far greater impact on this than the wheel change, but I can't say that with absolute certainty in this case.
Disclaimer 2: I also don't know which H&R Coilover I had -- they came on the car.
Cheers!

I've had a stock setup, H&R's, and KW V3 coilovers.
For performance:
KW V3 >>>>> Stock >> H&R's.
For ride and comfort:
Stock = H&R > KW V3 (disclaimer, I have my shocks set stiff but comfort is only slightly worse)
I found the H&R's to be too soft and couldn't believe how much more confident I felt with the stock springs back in. That didn't last either as the stock setup is really more suited for touring. My KW's made a huge improvement. After spending some time setting up the coilovers I let my friend drive the car last weekend. He is a Z06 guy, likes his 50/50 weight distribution, and wasn't a fan of the rear engine. Now, with the coilovers, he says he could easily own a 911. Before driving my car with the coilovers he was interested in the 991 GT3, now it seems he must buy it for survival.

I have a used set of H&R springs that I'd be willing to pass onto a local buyer (Seattle) area for a very fair price if anyone is interested. I haven't posted them up yet, but they are just sitting in a box in my garage (My 2001 Turbo was sold a couple months ago).
Thank you for the support
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to PM me and I will gladly answer them.

I had the H&R's combined with a new set of Bilstein Sports. They binded and made really, really annoying creaking sounds and took them off. I then used the Euro M030 set from Porsche and that is what I stuck with. Albeit they aren't as low as the H&R's, they are a great street combo with the Bilstein's.
I have an extra set if anyone is interested. Long story.... PM me if you want to buy them.

The 996 non-turbo is going to be very similar and shouldn't cause you any problems. I did find this one, for more information Click Here.

Yeah I didn't use a spring compressor, nor separate the tie rods, remove the brakes, etc..
It took me 4.5-5 hours the first time with a lot of pausing to figure it out. Probably 2+ hours next time. It really is pretty simple.
Good luck, let us know of any questions.
