996tt Reliability for years to come
996tt Reliability for years to come
I know this is an impossible question to answer and will vary car to car, but how do you think a well maintained 996tt will hold up over the next 5-7 years from 40,000 to 100,000+ miles?
If planning a purchase what kind of parts should I be expecting to replace with such age?

Some would say that it is a dead reliable super car, especially for day to day driving, taking it to the track and very robust if you wish to mod for more power with stock components. With others saying this they are correct when the car was 0-6 years old, but these cars are 7-12+years old and anything that old has items that are brittle and breaks! AND THESE CAR ARE NOT CHEAP TO FIX especially when this car cost $180 000 CDN NEW!! If you purchased a 06 Z06 and things break it is AFFORDABLE to repair without causing marital issues!
I love the car but to do anything on it is BIG $$, whether it be maintaining the car with items that go bad with age or modifications!
If you have a lot of extra disposable income you would love the car as it feels just right when driving and can make some good power, but only if you can just drop it off and write a big fat cheque when you need to without bothering your life style.
Ask me how I know the above as I had a choice between a 08 Z06 3LZ with 19km(not miles) or the car I currently have with 78km(not miles)without my listed mods. The Z06 was only $9000 more and in retrospect I should of gone that route for where I am in my life financially(as in building). I still believe the 911 is the better car out of the two, but maybe if I was more in the playing stage of my life and not financially building stage, being to do anything above the ordinary is $5000+ a shot!
My head gasket went and it took a portion of my head out. I purchased a used motor with 40 000 miles on it WITH CORE EXCHANGE privately for $8500 and I am still staring a $10000+ bill in the face for other misc parts and labour on top of the motor!!!!! I put new headgaskets on the new motor and all new other gaskets, bolts, tensioners, did port and polish, valve job, meth install(just labour), second fuel pump(just labour) etc.
2weeks after I bought the car the tranny decided to go south on me and I faced a $4000+ for a semi rebuild. For example you can get a full rebuild for that in a Supra. I could pay a shop $400 to swap a tranny in a Supra, M3, but it is $1500 for the 911.
The way my car is now As an overall car, many other cars other then very Elite super cars can match it's overall performance and I would not trade it for any Z06, BUT what it took to get here with "unexpected" expenses and the cost for modifications....., there are many other cost effective solid performing machines out there.
Thanks

The 996 is a great platform if you use the correct fuel make sure that it doesn't over boost and treat it well. You will enjoy it for a very long time.
Bobby sorry but the. Z06 is a nice car it's just not a Porsche no where near the characteristics of one.

I never said the Z06 or any car is better then a 911 T:

I just do not want him to be under the impression that he can buy a 7-12 year old car that cost $180k new and just expect to pay for your basic maintainence. Even basic maintainence is some dollars on this car, but still far less then a Prancing Horse or a Bull.
BTW: Corey thanks for all you help, my car is finally being wrapped up and should be heading down to EPL next week or the week after!

but on balance; i picked up my second tuned/modded 911t with 70k miles and i'm currently at 109k miles and beyond adhering to a simple maintenance schedule and proper care, in terms of unanticipated repairs, i have had to replace one radiator which i did in my driveway for a few hundred bucks and a six pack. oh yeah. re-bled the spoiler hydraulics. add another hour and another six pack lol

Bobbyfali all that is bad news but from what I've seen/read over the years its far from the norm and not the best example for a perspective buyer.

Same boat: Bought at 49K, now at 114K. Average of 2-3K/year maintenance. Mine is stock no mods driven daily. Water pump biggest component to go out. I wonder how many stock cars with no mods have had their engines and trannies replaced
Guys I own a 911T and do not plan on selling it anytime soon (unless Cory and I can work out a good deal on his 911T!)....please do not forget that.
The more and more I get deeper into this 911 World, the more I am finding out WHAT goes wrong and PEOPLE DO NOT POST! Talking to other members that I have purchased things from,as well as many WELL known vender's (EPL,911Marski,AutoWerks,UMW,PFaff Porsche etc!).
To the original poster of this thread, THIS CAR IS VERY RELIABLE CONSIDERING THE AGE AND VERY AFFORDABLE COMPARED TO OTHER EXOTICS.
The above would be a better way of answering your question and I am saying this without being sarcastic (seriously).
Cheers

Thanks for the input guys, I had a good chat with a local Porsche dealer today that basically mimicked the posts above.
The logical side of me is saying pick up a low mile C6 Z06 in the low $40s and call it a day. It'll be fast, loud, aggressive....but it will never be a Porsche. The other half of me is saying find the right 996TT and never look back.
If I were to pick up an '02 nearing 50,000 miles what would be some of the parts I should start replacing as a preventative caution?

..and then there are the myriad combinations of abs psm/cels to make sure you don't have if you can't dump the ecu for type 1-2 overrevs etc, but that and ppi's are overrated in my book.
all kidding aside there are known problem issues with this iteration that are more nuisance issues - spoilers failing ..or coolant tanks leaking/ps steering reservoirs whining/dv's honking lol ( whatever ) but beyond the latest seemingly time related issue ( blown coolant lines becoming more prevalent. not so good ) there are few issues that are deal breakers ( though my '02 developed 2nd gear pop shortly after purchase.. - cpo = prescience ) but beyond that, they are indeed, very robust.
other than that, a used 996t in proper shape is a 200 mph workhorse and it might be said about it that the beatings will continue until morale improves
Some sound advice. For me I wanted a low mileage TT. I found an '02 with 20,000 miles one owner with all of the records. Garaged all it's life and driven by a woman who owned an architectural firm. Now I can't say for sure how she drove the car but she did take good care of it. Will things go wrong with it in the future, absolutely! With all this said I paid 52k for it and it is brand new! I mean the detailer said the body is the best he has ever worked on and the paint is perfect. One has to expect to replace things due to age on an 11 year old car and it will be expensive. Hell I've earned this. I put three kids through college and have to pay an ex. You can't take it with you! Pay more for a low mileage super car and then drive it. When **** happens fix it! Most of all enjoy it as life is short!
I have both. And to drive daily the porsche has been awesome. I paid 39k for a 01 a year ago and I have almost 90k miles on it already. I drive it in the snow (corvette, no way) and to work everyday. 70 miles. It's stock with a tune 1.1 bar and exhaust. I plan to drive it till the wheels fall off
you have all the facts...I think it comes down to what stage in life are you with money wise...996tt will cost more to up keep and also cost more to Mod.
Vette are great but the 06 also may have rockers issues..I think that was the year.
Both are toys and for me it depends on how much dispposable income you have.
I always wanted a 996tt but I may go back to a vette...that's the fun part of this sickness...never happy!
