I agree ; if this was a TRUE test we'd do these 3 mods back to back to back. on the same stretch of road, on the same day, around the same time, with the same temperature, with the same gas, and the same tune. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. I plan on going back through the logs and checking ambient and IAT to see how much they vary.

At the end of the day i'd recommend people do what they want for their own cars. There are tons of vendors here that will supply you with what you need to run what you'd like to run.

The main reason I changed location is for security. When you spend a lot of money on a build and parts over the years its not worth the risk of the filter on the turbo for a primarily street driven car. The 10hp difference won't be a game changer in my opinion and you can pick up a lot more HP or equal to doing a lot of other things.

I will chip in, my friends car was running a fenderwell intake fom a US company, it was terrible, he is running GT30's with huge hotsides, the pipe was beat to hell to get inner clearance, we changed to a couple of 120 degree 3" silicone elbows and a short aluminium pipe and modded the IC cage, we have had to add 20% fuel into the map where it is sucking so much more air !
I went a different route

My builder does something very similar to this. He also moves IC cage backwards which creates more clearance.

The car was fast with the rubbish intake........................now its plumb crazy, mapper says quickest thing he has ever been in, its a GT3 top end on a turbo bottom end and redlines at 8500, can do 9K but better safe than sorry, motor was built by Todd @ Protomotive, its going on a hub dyno this week.

Bad intake

Any pics of the good intake? I'm a little worried my intakes will get beat to hell too. I won't know for sure until the car is on the ground and driving. I'm using 3" piping.

Silicone prices out pretty cheap and is easy to work with, I've been pondering trying it when I get to MAFless. It's damn tight all around though, pulled my exhaust off in anticipation of my new system arriving and have determined it's way past time I stopped using my lift for storage - PITA!

was that bad intake smashed in on purpose for clearance, or did the tire do that?

no idea how anyone fits 3" intakes in there without smashing in the chassis to fit the tubing into it. I"m running 2.5" and have very little clearance, maybe 3/4" (no rubbing) and an aggressive wheel offset.

I will get pics but we are now 3" from inlet to filter and have maybe an inch clearance between inner tyre and pipework, we cut the IC cage where it drops down from the top stud

We did not have time to replace this but the IC frame seems rock steady without it, for reference the small speed clip is where the bottom inner of the arch liner screws to. I will get pics for you guys asap but we are running 315/30.18's on Motorsport centrelocks which are 1" wider than the stock turbo twists.

I've also modified my IC cage to make my intakes work. With my car in the air I jacked my tire to sitting level and have ~ 3/4" clearance. It's tight but I think I can make it work. I may need to mod the IC cages more to pull the intakes closer but we'll see.
I'm using tight radius 90 deg 3" hose couplers off the turbos and then 3" piping. 2.5" piping would have been easier for clearance purposes for sure.

They are the Gt28 Alphas, they were from a EVOMS Signature 700 kit from 2009 but I was told they were ball bearing and they arent they are journal, we fitted restrictors and lost one straight away, now all sorted and running great with no restrictors, spool is very quick !!!

Anyone done the math to see what 2.5inch pipes can support? Might turn out to be big enough without the hassle to hp within reason. It certainly beats the miles long stock stuff and ribbed replacements IMO. How are people moving the cages back, any pics?

Moving the cage back won't work with factory OEM/aftermarket intercoolers as far as I can tell. You can mod some of the skeleton to make bigger intake pipes fit better though which I think most are doing. If you have a little mig/tig welder...it's a pretty easy job to tackle. I'll post some more pics of mine with the clearance soon.
