PCM/Nav use question
PCM/Nav use question
So the 996t Cab I bought has the Nav in it. Am I correct in assuming you have to have a disk in it to do anything more than give local Lat Lon coordinates (i.e. no base maps)? I'm a regular GPS chartplotter guy but everything in the last several years at least had base maps preloaded.
I'm guessing 10 yrs ago the CDs were king? There's CDs out there but not sure which ones to buy to match up.
I think it's a PCM 3.0
Anybody that can shed some light on this? I'll probably use my iphone through my bluetooth hands free which broadcasts FM but I can't stand having something in a vehicle that isn't functional!!!!!!
I didn't get any disks when I purchased the car.

You need the CD or DVD. If you have a 2001, you're beat - no updates available. 2002 and up, they should be available from the dealer. If you have a 2001 and want Florida, I can help. I replaced my head unit when I found out you can't get updates.
When you mentioned updates does that mean there'll be a disk that'll have the basemap and include updates or updates only on the disk and I would still need to start by getting the basemap(s) disk for my target region?
You need the CD to load the maps for your area, but once they're loaded you can remove the CD and use the single disc player for music. The nav system stores some map data but I'm not exactly sure how far away from your current location it does it for. I generally stay within 50 miles of home and the disc stays in the storage slots until I get outside of that area.
My nav unit was blown at one point and was replaced, but they forgot to remove the CD. I finally got a copy of the West US CD from a member on the board here for free (can't remember who, but thanks!!!). I couldn't find a disc for my '04 on ebay or from the dealer or anywhere, so if he hadn't sent one to me, I don't know what I would have done.

Just wish I didn't have a 10yr old PCM in the car.
