About to pull the trigger on '01 996 TT, need advice PLEASE!
Hi there, new member here.
I am about to purchase a fairly nice looking '01 Turbo, 6-speed, 57K miles from Miami.
Car seems to be in nice shape, but being involved with Jaguars for the last 15 years, I know that there is no such thing as "nice shape" on a 13 y/o exotic car.
Here she is at the dealership, prior to purchase by last owner:

Now, 5 month later car is for sale again, seemingly in good shape, after $3K worth of misc. maintenance: brake pads, cooling expansion tank, CV boots, clutch slave cylinder.
Long story short, what do I check and what seem to be the most common issues with those?
I have my own shop and lift, but do not want to run into something extremely major.

How long have you been looking and how many cars have you considered? The reason I'm asking is the condition can and does vary greatly. I looked for nearly a year for my Turbo. During that time I found more than a dozen cars that I considered that were scattered across the country. I had people on forums like this check them out for me and if everything looked really good, I'd pay for a very thorough PPI at a cost of up to $300.
Sadly I'd paid for a few PPIs before I found a mint car where everything was 100%. The color and option package was not my first choice, but you may not be able to find exactly what you want in a mint no issue car. From owning several Porsches previously, I learned to buy the very best example you can find as it will be the least expensive to maintain and hold it's value the best. It will however cost more up front when you make the purchase.
I would look to buy a car from an enthusiast that keeps everything perfectly maintained all the time. This will cost more but should need nothing. Make sure all service records are there, no paint work, no accidents, rust free and corrosion free undercarriage. And yes you can find a near perfect example of an '01 but it might cost a bit more than what you are looking at.
So, I have had my Turbo for over 3 years and spent less than $150 on repairs during that time. The only thing that it has needed was a clutch accumulator, an easy DIY.
Good Luck!

I am not scared of some issues, therefore price is very important. I could easily pay $10K more for a "perfect" example, but I'd prefer to invest some time and save a few $$. What I do not want it majorly ill car. Also, color is important to me, no black, no yellow, no dark blue, or green, no convertible, no automatic, which makes my search even harder.
Car I am looking at had accident in 2008, which seems to be a minor issue, otherwise being from TX most of its life, I am confident that there will be no rust.
I just looked at 2002 unit in Columbus, OH with 83K miles and it ran very strong, while needing immediate clutch, ABS work and it also had some engine rattle at idle, sounded like lose chain. At $32K it was a terrible deal, even if it was local.
Thanks for your advice
Seems like a good deal but I'd be concerned why he's selling it after 5 months.
Can someone confirm what rear add-on that is, I want it so bad...

sorry to jack the thread......
My friend drove it today and said second gear was fine under load, while clutch was little stiff, however he is out of the "stick shift" game for a few years and rather poor judge. He also mentioned that car scared him ****less in almost every gear, until it was too scary to accelerate any longer.
He did notice that some segments in climate control digits were not lit up, it is common, is it big deal to fix?
Thanks to all of you again!

I'll call for PPI same shop where last maintenance was done, they covered CV boots, Radiator Expansion tank, clutch slave cylinder, brake pads, oil change and other misc items. I suppose they did what was needed, since scope of repair is rather wide.
