I would think because of wear factor and bigger clearances with your miles ,, to go with 5W40 at least..

The consensus is 0w40 isn't great. I run 15w40 (Rotella T6). The mobile 1 TDT 15w40 is good too.

Would 5w50 be ideal for a higher mileage car in a very warm climate?

Um, pretty sure those are both five weight forty oils. Not fifteen. Don't want a typo screwing up a new guy's engine.

If whatever oil you have been using got the engine to 81K miles with no issues arising from oiling why change?

There is no real reason to change oil grades other than a change to accommodate a change in ambient temperature.

If you drive your car year 'round you can if you want to switch to 5w-50 (not a typo for 15w-50!) for the summer months then switch back to 0w-40 (or an approved 5w-40) for winter driving that's your call.

Where I live it doesn't get that cold so at 125K miles on my Turbo at its next oil change I'm having the dealer use 5w-50 oil. I switched my Boxster to this oil last oil change and will stay with this oil going forward.

However, both the Turbo at over 120K miles and the Boxster at 280K miles have no issues with 0w-40 oil. The engines idle quiet, and with the Turbo and its oil pressure gage I see no low oil pressure even at hot idle.

You should never mix oils. With oils the additive package is very important, critical in fact, and by blending two different oils you end up with some Frankenstein oil that has only half of each oil's addictive package and in which the additives may work against each other rather than work together.

I mix oil weights ( not brands ) and if I have a problem, that isn't it. I'll never run 0-40 again it is just too thin for the ambient temps. I run a 60/40 mix of 0-40 & 5-40 in the cooler months and same ratio mix of 5-40 & 5-50 castrol edge cpl weeks ago. Since switching to the heavier blend(s) I have yet to hear an awful oil starved screech at startup. But I'll make s final judgment on that once temps are 100+ daily. This week it'll be 105+ so I'll be listening lol

The suggestion to mix the 0-40 w 5-40 came to me from guys that prep and race pcars here. Its fine.

Just switched from Mobile1 0w-40 to Castrol 5w-40 and the engine is quieter. Less "loose marbles in the crankcase" sound...
